Im out battling the crowds for a deal on a new hunting rifle. I dad my heart set on a Winchester Model 70 Supergrade in 30-06. LeBaron has the best sale on but only has the feather lite compact in .308. I handled the rifle and it feels superb. Granted the wood is not as nice. Main thing I have against it is the barrel on the compact is only 20". Figure that with a fewer fps out of .308 I would not want to lose on barallel length. It is a great deal though $700 all in it seems with the sale.

Sail has exactly what I want but for $1120 rather than Lebaron's regular price of $1k. They won't price mat h unless Lebaron has the same rifle in stock. Darn! Would have walked out with it but can't justify spending more instead of waiting.

I have to say though, even though I like the Supergrade in 30-06, the compact featherlite felt it matched my 5'6" frame better.

Off to check Bass Pro now.

Should I be concerned about the .308 with the 20" barrel being able to take moose and caribou upto 300 yards vs a 30-06 with a 24" or 22" barallel?

One thing I have learnt my lesson well over time, is that if you are there, and "it" is there, you had better act on it! Don't let 120. hold you up, if it's what you had your heart set on! You could end up breaking your own heart!
Like Ricky says: "you got to please yourself"!

Not a whole lot the same between the Super Grade 30-06 and the Featherweight 308 other than bore size. If you have your heart set on the '06 then don't compromise or you'll end up disappointed. But for all practical uses the 308 will do what you want to do.

Truly there are almost sales on all the time and boxing day is tough. If the gun is right buy it. Better to buy the right gun and spend more than buy the wrong gun and they try and flip it on the ee for a loss. I buy what you are looking for and look for the 30 06.

Decided to go home and take a break. Bass Pro had no 30-06 either.

One thing that I have decided though after handling a few is that I don't actually want the Supergrade. This will be a hunting rifle and I found thr wood on the featherlite fine and appreciated the lower weight.

Going to try to call around tomorrow to see who might have a FW 06 in stock. Maybe thr Lebaron in Mississauga does or it may be worth a trip to Epps!

That's a great decision. If you like the fit of the featherweight over the supergrade then that is important. Settling for one model or cartridge that you weren't planning on is fine if a great deal comes up but don't compromise on both. That said, the 308 will do everything that you are asking of it.
