US ammo prices coming down -anything for us?

Lately I've noticed some decent pricing on ammo on several US websites. Looks like 308/7.62x51 can be had for $400-500/k again, and 223 Tula as cheap as $200/k.

7.62x39 is nicely priced here in Canada at the moment. I wonder if any other calibres will tame down in price for us?

Just looked at a old GunRunner newspaper from 1999 and IVI 308 was advertised at $299/k here in Canada. :(
 
Well if the U.S. thought of us as true allies, then they would let Canadians purchase ammo, so we stand united and fortify the continent.
 
No. Prices here only go up or stay stable no matter what the exchange rate does. It's the Canadian way. Or have you not noticed it overall over the past many years?
 
This issue is multi tiered. One one hand the U.S. State Department will not allow certain calibers of ammo to leave the U.S. (and certain calibers from certain countries) Second, NRCAN will not allow shipments that fail their testing. (happens all the time and recently happened with 500,000 rounds of surplus ammo that came into the country a few months ago) Third, some ammo has not been sent to NCRAN for testing yet, so maybe it "can" come here, but no one has done it. The problem there is demand. It's difficult for any dealer to commit to say 1,000,000+ rounds of ammo and no one buy it after they go through all the work. It goes back to the size of our market vs. the U.S.

Don't blame the dealers...take a minute and look at all the costs associated with getting ammo into Canada. It is a wonder anyone does it at all. People often compare directly with the US, when at the end of the day...you can't compare them. We are a different country and the stuff has to be export and imported. No changing that. If you think that the gun dealers are all rich robber barons....maybe import some of your own and stick it to the man eh?
 
It (the price gouging) isn't restricted only to ammo or firearms or anything like that. Look at 80% of the other products. Go to Home Depot and compare Canada & USA. Go to Toyota. Go to WalMart. Go to the gas station for fuel. Go to Sears for a watch. Go. Look. Compare.
 
I agree it's a multi-tiered issue. I started shooting in the 80's and remember the some wonderful ammo prices from the 80's to about 9/11. Sadly I too don't think things will change much for us due to all the obstacles now in place. If only our southern neighbour would be alittle less stern with their continental ally, that could really help our hobby.
 
The US has an issue with how tolerant we are as a society. Tolerant towards racial minorities and immigration, that is. They see Canada as a free breeding ground for terrorism and while terrorists aren't likely to be launching attacks from here, they may take opportunity to obtain US equipment (like ammunition, weapons, night vision, etc.) and send it overseas to be used against US occupation forces.

Sounds like a stretch? Quite certainly. But I bet if I'd told you on 9/10/2001 that airplanes were going to collapse the WTC tomorrow, you'd have probably thought that was crazy too. Never underestimate the imagination of a paranoid people. They take self preservation to a whole new level, often at the expense of everyone else around them. Little wonder they're the most hated nation on Earth.
 
Um, the USA doesn't control how much markup we see on fuel or ammo or spray paint or a Japanese watch. If the USA hates us then why is WalMart so successful here? And Home Depot. And why did Canadian Tire fail miserably when it tried to expand into the USA? Why does your Internet here cost more than it would in the USA? And why is it that most of the McD specials you see on TV never actually happen in Canada?
 
I've noticed a couple stores have dropped prices SLIGHTLY.

For example: One store I occasionally go to was selling Winchester USA Brand 9mm 100 round value pack $27.94 and is now selling for $26.94.
 
All i have to say is taxs taxs taxs!!!
If we were paying what most US people pay in income tax then gunshops could do well with only a 10% mark up.
There is allso all the import BS thats cost $$$ as well

that's almost an insult, a paltry $1 to show that they're "doing something" when in fact it's next to nothing - but enough to give the consumer a warm-n-fuzzy
 
My 30-06 bullets at walmart have come down from 43.99 to 39.99.......


not sure how long they will stay there but at at least one of your out there got your fill... sporting goods guy said 10 boxes gone in 3 1/2 days
 
The rational answer to all of this is population size. Canada has roughly 1/10 the population of the USA. We have to ship the ammunition, in smaller lots, the same distances. That equates to much lower profits. It just isn't profitable. NRCAN doesn't do anything to alleviate matters either. That doesn't mean the NRCAN is out to get us, it just means that the ammunition coming in, won't pass their specs or it isn't submitted for testing in the first place. It's all about logistics and most importantly, MONEY.

Actually, a Canadian company was caught selling components and parts for helicopters and aircraft to Iran after importing them into Canada against the end user certificate. This was one of the issues that forced the tightening up of exports to Canada. So it is not so simple and ideal. I find it is very difficult to define the US as easily as you have ....unless your ranting. They have a government that makes things complicated for export into Canada....we have a government that makes it difficult for importing ammunition. The result is a double wammy that increases the costs...I think that is about as deep you can go....
 
In Canada we have lot's of lead copper and gunpowder......We just need to start making brass and primers or trads some of our powder and metals to Europe in exchange for Brass and primers.

we allready make all of those thing right in canada, but the company will not sell to us.
