Hi there,

This is some kind of a noob question, but here it goes:

It is sometime worth it to go buy some stuff "on the US side". Is it worth it (or even possible) to go to plattsburg, find a wallmart and buy some 9mm ammo?

I think I read somewhere you cannot import more than 5000 rounds at a time and I do know you have a maximum amount of $$ you can spend depending on the amount of time you spend there...

Anyone does this? is it worth it? is it a lot of trouble? is it doable at all?

Thanks,

Canadian law allows to bring up to 5000rds. You are right here.

US law DOESN'T; and you may be in very deep and smelly brown stuff if you get caught. You loose your car, US$25K fine and 5 years of prison. Then the aftermath.
DO NOT even attempt doing it.

It's not worth it - due to requirement for you to get US export permit first, and exchange is not good now either.

It is doable - get US export permit (if they'll issue you one).

Aww.. It was all before me and I didn't find it

Well well, I think #9 was forgotten (full cavity search) :). OMG this seems like a real pain and a major load of paperwork and delay...

One advise thou, if you plan on shooting alot, you will eventually start reloading - save all your brass for the future to save money and to know the brass is once fired.

If you don't see remote chance of shooting considerable amounts in the future, see if there is a local guy who can appreciate your brass, he will most likely reload for a while and have more experience with guns in many areas - something you can take advantage of and learn..

Some things you can legally bring back and it may be worthwhile doing, dies, presses, moulds, scales, binos, spotting scopes, all reloading supplies except components.

You guys are all wrong!

You do NOT need a permit to export personal amounts ammo from the US to Canada. You do however need a US State hunting linence to possess the ammo in the US. Go on the Alaska Fish and Game website and for $20 you can print off a small game hunting licence. Problem solved.

As for importing it back into Canada. You can import up to 5000 rounds with needing to apply for an explosives permit. Under that 5000, you can buy as much as you want at any value, you just need to declare it when you reach customs. At that point in time, you will have to pay the Canadian tax on the Canadian value. Nothing more.

Now, is it worth it? Back when the dollar was close to par, I was able to pick up boxes of Remington UMC 9mm at ####'s for $8us a box. The Buffalo Gun Center also sold cases for $160-$200us depending on brand etc. The last I checked, ####'s was selling the UMC 9mm for $12us and Buffalo Gun was all over $200us for a case. So as of right now, you won't be saving much money. Unless you can find it for under $10 a box somewhere.

When you get your state small game licence, and go shopping for your 5,000 rounds of ammunition, be sure to print off this thread, so that when you are stopped on your way to the border for an export check, you will have proof that your small game licence supercedes US State Dept. controls on the export of small arms ammunition.

You would think if it were so 'insidious' and was such a pressing matter they would post placards at points of sale stating :

ATTN NON RESIDENTS/ALIENS
POSSESION OF AMMUNITION PROHIB

Much like they do for under age 21 drinking or sale of cigarettes, posters on the walls every 27 inches apart

PS...I know it is illegal

Been there, done that.

Believe what you want, but I have never purchased ammo in Canada before, I always buy it in the states. I have been stopped on export before as well when leaving the US with 1000+ rounds of 9mm ammo. The only thing I have ever been asked for, is if I have a US State hunting licence.

"...You guys are all wrong!..." Nope. Current U.S. law requires the export permit for any amount of ammo. You can't legally buy ammo to bring back either. The hunting licence lets you buy ammo for hunting or while at a match only. Not to buy a case and export it.

Alright, well I am speaking based on first hand knowledge from dealing with US Customs officers. Anything other than that, I can't tell you.

we were told by the us cuctoms officers at the border at 1ooo island to buy a hunting license as well to be in posession of ammo , went to wally world got one , bought our ammo at the gun show and came home no problems , they now we can bring back the 5000 legally by our custome ,
