US F-class National Championships in Sacramento

Still don't understand. would a match have first to third for each shooting class in each category (open or TR_)?

I ask because that was the method in Silhouette where shooters were groups based on their score/skill. There was obviously an overall match winner but each class got prizes based on the number of participants.

So a novice shooter would 'compete' against other similar skilled shooters. made for a whole lot more prizes but it did go over well with the competitors.

Is this the same thing?

Or is it a kind of ranking based on past performance and not a handicapp system at all.

Jerry

Jerry there are two F-Classes - F/Open, and F/TR. The difference is determined by equipment, not shooter skill (F/TR is restricted to .223 Rem or .308 Win). Each would have its own prize list.

There is also the possibility of classifying shooters based on their skill/performance. The idea is a well intentioned one, though it can be abused (by the "sandbagging" reference above it sounds like perhaps this happened at the US-FCNC?), but even if it isn't abused there still are shortcomings (for another post, sometime, I might explain why I think that classification systems are bound to nearly always fail to achieve their goals).

Shooter classifications are things like "Master, Expert, Sharpshooter" - that is what we use in Canadian TR (iron sight shooting), we don't at this time use a shooter classification system in F-Class. In the USA they add an additional classification at the high end, "High Master". Sometimes "Marksman" is used as another class on the lowest end. For whatever reasons most US shooters take a great deal of pride in their classification, seeing it as an earned accomplishment.

I'm not aware of a points handicapping system being used in shooting. I am not sure how that would (or wouldn't) work in practice.

The Aussies also have a system in addition to the above in which they place shooters into three equal-sized "Divisions" (A,B,C) at each match, which is probably worth looking into. The Aussies have a *lot* of fullbore shooters (about 6000 nationwide), and maintain an online database of shooters' scores and rankings on the NRAA website.

Daniel, if not to offer some form of handicapp system or a division of prizes, why bother?

Yes, I too see alot of enthusiasm to reach a certain ranking. Something to work towards which is very positive but if a Sportsmans is not handicapped to a High Master, then they are simply shooting within their own group, until they get better and move up.

I was hoping that we would have a system similar to golf where you have a gross and net score. Then each class would be given a ratio to improve their score so after an adjustment, a novice having a great match could do well on a net score basis vs a high master.

Theoretically, a novice playing to their handicapp or better can tie or beat a top ranking player having a bad day.

I feel that is a huge incentive as has shown in golf. Rankings are adjusted based on ongoing match results as they are now.

It is a simple math algorithm that can be decided by the shooting body and added to the scoring spreadsheet. Hit enter and a new set of net scores are listed.

For most of the matches I will attend, the number of shooters doesn't warrant this complication but it seems that in the US or on a national basis, could be alot of fun.

Thanks for the post Glen and congrats on a fine finish in what I hear was some crazy conditions.I've been trying to get this list sorted out from all the result pages.
Got a favour to ask. Can you go through the list and highlite the Canadian shooters in red or something .
Great pic of you and the "pertner" on the web .
Thanks

Daniel, if not to offer some form of handicapp system or a division of prizes, why bother?

Ordinarily that is what is done; apparently at the FCNC this was not done (I get the impression that the match organizers discovered that the the classification system had been corrupted by people intentionally getting themselves in a lower classification than they should be in).

Ordinarily, the top placings in a match are open to being won by anybody (though in most cases they would probably end up being won by Masters). In addition to these "open" prizes, there are a number of "reserved" prizes too (e.g. 1st 2nd and 3rd place in Expert Class, 1st 2nd 3rd in Sharpshooter Class, etc).

I'm not familiar with how handicapping is done in golf, but we do have that as evidence of some system that seems to work well for them.

Perhaps further discussion of this should be done in a thread of its own? (if you start one, let me know and I'll join you there).

Thanks for the post Glen and congrats on a fine finish in what I hear was some crazy conditions.I've been trying to get this list sorted out from all the result pages.

I'm looking forward to hearing reports from Glen, Terry, Keith etc, but just based on reading the results it looks to me like the conditions must have been pretty darn hard (possibly even with "unfair relays" too?), and also there must have been an awful lot of very good shooters there. In looking through the standings I saw a lot of people whose names I recognize and who I know to be fantastic shooters - and they were spread all through the results list, from top to middle to bottom.

Just the Cdn scores from the US FClass Nationals in Sac...

As always, we had a ball down there. With Don Nagel, Ian Kelbly and Scott Fleck in a room two doors down from Glen and my room, and Tom Fripp above us on the 2nd floor, and Les Dolhun was over in the new wing of the hotel, we had many a joke telling party in the parking lot.

In total, we had 10 Canucks down for this match, 8 in Open and 2 in FTR

Thanks Keith,
In view of the Great Canadian showing I really think someone needs to change the frowning face on the OP to something more appropriate.

Just found this one but I think these would be better

Hope to see you all on the mounds this summer.

The sandbagging comment by Trevor was taken as a joke. He might have been referring to me, or D. Rodgers, or G. Rasmussen. The continued conversation about sandbagging is insulting. I know that none of the three of us consider sandbagging acceptable.

Thanks for clearing that up Terry, I had thought that it was a serious statement of something that happened; glad to hear otherwise.

I was curious though how the classifications were determined - did most of the Canadians have enough shots fired in previous US matches to get a good classification?

Were there any shooters there from a country other than Canada or USA?

Well Done Canada!!! Terry, I'm thrilled with your stellar performance!

I was quite surprised at how the placings ended up. It just goes to show - as Ron Hermes likes to say - "Some days you eat the bear, and some days the bear eats you"

The top Open shooter was a rookie shooting a 300 WSM and 210 grain bullets. It goes to show that heavy 30's are still a force to be reckoned with.

He has been shooting FTR for a few yrs, no rookie there. His rifle was not ready so he took out an Open gun he had build and ready (guess that is the key eh, maybe I should have used my 308 barrel, it was ready hummmm) instead. He must have had an existing current poor Open classification of SS or Marksmen in Open. He only dropped 20 points out of 135 shots for score, 4 at 600(45 shoots), 11 at the first 1000 set (45 shots) and then only 5 in Sunday(45 shots, only 8 in FOpen broke 440 that day, even HM-High Masters had problems with the wind switches that day from 1 to 2), for a 1330-57x ... 42.222 % were X's!! out of a possible 1350-135X. Some Very good shooting.

Hi all, it was an absolute blast! Even with all the crossfires.

I want to take a minute and thank Cody and the people at Milarm Company for sponsoring the PPRA Team with the spiffy shirts. Just wish we had done better......realizing we don't usually get a bunch of practice and development in at -30 in 2 feet of snow. Again, thanks to Cody and Milarmco.

Back to the grind.

Cheers, Glen
