US M1 Carbine

In original 'as issue' condition, they're restricted due to barrel length and being a semi-auto centre fire. Have been since 1 Jan., 1978. Applies to all carbines, milsurp or the assorted commercial copies. The original stupid law was aimed at the Carbine. Rumour has it that it was to combat the Montreal gangs and biker gangs.
Around 1979, Iver Johnson made some carbines with 19" barrels. There have been some aftermarket 19" barrels made since too. Haven't a clue who made 'em though. Requires a barrel vise and the correct action wrench to change the barrel.

The bbl extensions are butt ugly to boot. I have a nice Saginaw take-off bbl, fortunately the original length, that has the front end turned down so that an extension sleeve could be silver soldered on. I also have the extension which I am planning to shorten to flush with the muzzle, turn down to the original bbl diameter, re-park, and then re-attach so that an original foresight can be mounted. Another challenge with this one is that the gas piston is somehow secured so that it cannot be removed after the piston nut is out. The piston will not move fore and aft, so I think this might have been some sort of single shot conversion. Going to have to drill this one out to replace it. Has anybody else ever encountered this modified piston situation?

probably just really carboned up id soak it in a carbon remover (automotive stuff probably best) could be rusted in there too

well if it rotates its NOT welded in it cant be as the top end (end you can see) is much bigger then the end in the gas port

soak it in some gm top cleaner or seafoam and it will come out you need somthing that will dissolve the carbon and powder residue

"...bbl extensions are butt ugly to boot..." Depends on what kind. Made a few that looked like flash hiders, then it was decided, for no apparent reason, that they had to be rifled. Put the kybosh on all the other designs too. Everything from just a tube to extensions that looked like tank gun/105 Howitzer muzzle brakes.
Had my Plainfield done when it was still legal. The guy, a master machinist, used a hunk of .303 barrel. He machined it to look like part of the barrel and reinstalled the sight. You have to look very close to see it.
"...gas piston is somehow..." Is it possible a bit of broken piston nut is still in there?
"...piston would be welded..." Better to remove it and replace with a solid plug. Makes it a straight pull bolt action. Have an article around here about turning carbines into that and/or a pump action. Both involve installing a solid plug.
