US special operations snipers are getting a new rifle that fires 3 different calibers

Surprised they'd be adding those two cartridges to the supply chain though.

Because the .300NM and .338NM are much better ELR cartridges. Designed to push the big heavy high BC .30 and .33 at good speeds, all while being optimized for mag length.

Obviously there’s way better cartridges then the .338LM and .308W but it’s all about inter-operability. When you go overseas you need to be able to get ammo from other people if you need common rounds so you can get ammo from other countries if need be. And They also need something that doesn’t eat barrels like some cartridges. The only reason why the .338LM is around is because it was actually designed for sniping it was never adopted from some thing else like the .50BMG

Can't really understand the multi cal rifle theory. The rifle will be a compromise in any configuration. A compromise when you need it most. Mostly too heavy because it must cater for the "options" and possibly clumsy. Why not go the other way. With the really good muzzle brakes and suppressors available the recoil is not as much of an issue allowing for a lighter weight rifle. Rather have purpose built rifles where the Barrelled action or stock can be replaced without the need of an armourer. Some SF units are starting to use modern carbon stocked lightweight rifles. Just about every soldier I talk to seems to complain about the weight of the gear. no need to make it heavier. There are so many options/ possibilities.

I think you may have missed what I said earlier. The multi cal isn’t to be able to change on a mission while carrying the other parts. It’s only for training so you can train with .308 since it’s cheap then when you switch to .338Lm there is no change the feel of the rifle. Now you only need one gun instead of two and it would be faster to replace shot out barrels since you dont need to send the gun into the armorers. When on deployment you would only have the gun in the .338 set up and that’s it. You would never take a bolt .308 overseas

OK didn't get that bit. Not sure if one would change the bits back and forth. Rather have a few training rifles at base.

Strange that they wouldn't pick one cartridge and be done with it,,, that way the shooter and spotter only need to use 1 ballistics chart...

Quick simple and fast.

I'm going this route with my mid bore this summer.

That way everything is the same across the board. Less reading the ever changing winds, air pressure,,, and elevation differences.

It’s mostly done with Kestral Ballistic programs, so memorizing charts isn’t as important versus understanding how changes in pressure and elevation affects the ballistics. But it’s because of ammo costs. .338LM is $8 a round to the CAF
