Gents, question for those experienced in cross-border travel with firearms

I have an ar15 receiver registered in Canada as a frame/receiver only. I also have a pistol buffer tube on said receiver.

Question: if i wanted to attend a shoot down south, perhaps add a <16" barreled upper, but also get pistol status (vs sbr status), is this possible and how?

it is much more complicated than that and different states have different laws.
Some of the basic laws are that it can not be made from a receiver that was previously used as a rifle.

Here is the link to the ATF regulations.
I would make sure I don't run afoul of these regulations.

it would have never been registered as a rifle in the states and only as a reciever / frame here in canada

It's a minefield.

The distinction between certain pistol configurations...

Pistol vs. SBR

It happened in Arkansas...

I wouldn't even think about it.

There is a zillion pistols and semi-auto rifles in the states. Why are they concerned about one that converts from rifle to pistol or vice versa? Is this the start of issues towards gun control down there?

It's been like this for a long time. Nothing new. Short Barrel Rifles (SBR's) are controlled and need to be registered like a silencer and pay the $200 tax if I remember correctly.

I could be wrong about the tax, but they do need registration.

The laws is the usa are written and they are followef to the letter. Good or bad. But they are black and white. We are stuck with ambiguous poorly written laws that are applied and then followed to the spirit of the law.

I prefer the usa versions.

Fall in similar category to suppressors with the NFA in USA.
