so i had my first real experience at the range today, and found out why im buying a bore guide this week. ive been looking for one for a while and havent had the chance to get one yet. today at the range the 700 started to act up and not fire. if i gave the bolt a good solid shove i could pull the trigger, managed to put 12 rounds through her before the issue happened. on shot number 10 it didnt fire, so i opened the bolt partially and closed it and the gun went off. this has never happened to me before, luckily it was pointed safely down range and just ate the back stop. put two more through it with no issues, at the time i didnt think anything of it. shot 13, lucky 13, and no dice. she wasnt shooting anymore. i thought i broke my rifle basix trigger spring. had the rso take a look he figured the same thing had happened. oh well, i had 4 other guns there so i packed it up and played with those.

got her home and puller her apart, the trigger was full of oil and was getting stuck and not engaging the bolt and triggering the firing pin. im guessing the cleanings shes been receiving regularly had leaked some oil in to the trigger assembly and some dirt must have gotten lodged in there. took the trigger off cleaned it out and now shes working again. i didnt know the importance of a bore guide until now. so if you dont have one, get one. im picking one up this week before i clean her again. although im also wondering if this could be oil drops from the bolt as i do oil the bolt up as well.
 
I think you clean your gun to much.....and yes a bore guide is a very good thing
 
I'm with Jamie. Stop cleaning it until the groups start to open up. That oil and crap getting into the trigger are also going down onto the bedding. I will almost bet when you popped the action out of the stock there was oil between the action and bedding too.

Lighter fluid is your friend when it comes to cleaning a trigger even in the range. If you trigger gets gummed up squirt some lighter fluid into the trigger and carry on.

Why reload the rifle after the thing fired on closing the bolt? There is serious problem with the rifle. It fired without pulling the trigger. And then you wrote about it in a public forum!

Why wouldn't he write about it?

The guy had a bolt action rifle malfunction, not a semi auto go full auto and brag about it.

If a gun needs to be cleaned a lot there is probably something wrong with it.

The malfunction - no problem. I do have a problem with the fact this rifle was loaded after a "surprise shot". The firing mechanism malfunctioned! No big deal, I'll load it up again. Mishaps happen, but when a rifle fires without trigger pull it should not be loaded until trigger is fixed.

Could be the dreaded Remington 700 "safety of doom" misfire. Not like its uncommon.
 
Who installed the rifle basix trigger for you?
How much sear engagement has it got and who adjusted it?

If you bjust bought the trigger and installed it yourself fresh out of the box without any adjustments made how can you be sure it was set up in a rifle or even in a rifle that matches yours for firing pin specs and or action machining??

It might not be safe no matter what you clean it with.......just sayin'
 
I installed the trigger. Everuthing i read said not to tamper with it because it works out of the box. I eanted to try and see what the problem was being a bolt action facing down range it may only pop one off in a safe direction. I clean it after my range trips to avoid copper fouling. This thing has fouled a few times once really bad so i try and keep her clean. I dont put any oil in to the trigger but i oil the bolt down as well. How fast does the lighter fluid dry oit ?
 
This trigger is fine ive smashed the butt off the ground hard multiple times and no issues from it even the factory x mark trigger was fine in this gun
 
Lighter fluid drys out right away and leave a very thin film of lubricant on the moving parts of the trigger. Your bolt only needs a light film of oil to stop in from rusting, but you should grease the back of the locking lugs and the primary extraction point on the action and bolt.
Oil and solvent can also creep down through the bedding screws.

I also put a dab of grease on the cocking cam in the bolt.

It helps a lot to store the rifle muzzle down (I put muzzle on a pad of paper towel). The residual oil/solvent in barrel will run out the muzzle, instead back into the trigger and bedding.
 
That couls be a big issue too i store it muzzle up in my safe. I try to put enough oil on the bolt juwt to get a light coating on it. Ill eveb wipe it lightly with a rag just to leave a thib film on it. I thibk itll be time for a heavy barrel soon anyways this one is hovering at 1000 rounds. The way im shooting it ill have another 1000 by the end of the year. That should cut down on cleanings. Thanks for the tips and help guys
 
No more Remington 700'3 for me!!!

I had a Remington 700 in .270 win that liked to go off when the bolt was being cammed down.

I sent it back to Remington and they replaced firing pin/bolt and trigger and give me a x mark pro trigger-it still did this.

I latter heard this is a flaw with these guns.

Lucky we had it in a safe direction like you said.I sold mine back to the company I bought it from, telling them it had a problem (they put it on the shelf for immediate sale!!:eek:).I sold the gun after learning about a guy where the bolt blew out of the gun damaging his hand so bad it required 3 surgeries!!! So much for pointing it in a safe direction !?!

I now shoot a Browning X-bolt in .300 win mag and like the trigger even better.:D
 
Thats the only issue ive ever had with her and it was due to dirt. Otherwise its bren great to me. Although i just shot my new savage axis and for a cheap gun im quite impressed with ir
