Used Beretta 686 vs a new Winchester 101

Yes, I've even shot a DT10 at the olympics and hunt with a 682.

Big difference between a 686 and 682.

How so? qualifying this would help considerably. I'm not disagreeing as I have 3 berettas (A400, 682, and DT10) and have zero winchesters but i'm not convinced it is better in all cases (e.g. 686)... maybe.

Just go and ask any gunsmith and he will tell you that It's very rare that he receive a Beretta 680 action that has a problem from the factory.
Search the web and you will see that the new Wins 101 has several problems.
And that is why you see more Beretta than Wins 101.

Good point... we did go through the "new" vs. "old" 101 discussion. I understand the new ones are poop and earlier qualified my opinion is strickly on the old design.

since the OP is looking at a new 101, I will agree. NO 101, yes 686 :)

I've been shooting a 686 Special Sporting for 20 yrs. now. It doubles as a Pheasant and clays gun.It has over 60,000 rds. through it so far and the only problem was a broken trigger spring. If you can source an older 686, then jump on it.

The problem with the new FN built 101s is that most places are over charging for them IMO. They're not worth 1700. Prophet River had them for 1300.00. My girlfriend bough hers for about that. The wood LOOKS nice, but it's a cheap finish.

Also, do a net search on the new 101. There's some issue with the original release of these 'Select' model 101s as opposed to the current run. Something about the FN made 'Select' being a discontinued model sold off cheap by CDNN (CDNN was selling them for $1000 US). And I suspect that many made their way to Canada. Much like the Franchi Diamond 20g O/Us that were a ####'s promo for $800 in the U.S. made their way here so some scamming Canadian gun stores could try to rip us for $1200-1400 a peice.

Truth be told, I don't think the quality of FN shotguns is quite what it use to be. Had a bunch of FN made Win 101s and SX3s pass through my hands and could find quallity issues with every one. Uneven ribs, poor stock to reciever fits, loose safties, etc. Browning hasn't been much better lately, and aside from the solid peices coming out of the Japanies facories, I don't hold much hope for my favourite brand anymore. Next duck gun will be a Beretta me thinks.
