If you are going to sell a rifle, are you marking it up 20% to reflect our current hyper inflation?

Ive seen a Rem SPS /Nikon scope used for over $1000 or a Sendero for 1K and can't believe some of the used prices but then think if the big gun companies are uping price by 20-40% why shouldnt the individual??

What are your thoughts??

Nope, I will sell for what I believe they are worth, without the dollar markup. They are used, and I bought them at a lower cost than they sell new, especially now.

Still, if you are just selling off stuff then it doesnt really matter what you sell it for. However if you are selling it to make another purchase for something new, you should get a fair market value so you can put more towards your purchase. If you paid $300 for something that is now selling for $1000 then fair pricing would be in the $500-700 depending on condition. Aside from that, the buyers on this site are pretty savvy too so you just may not sell it and eventually have to drop your pants anyways to get rid of it. Just cause its a Winchester doesnt mean you will get $1000 for it cuz they dont make them anymore...:)
 
Well, it all depends too...

If the gun is in great shape and some work has been done to it to make it even better, then it may cost more than brand new at a store.

e.g. I just did trigger job on my 1911 last night and re-sprung it and action is way better than it was new. I will do a few finishing touches to it and IF I'm to ever sell it - I'll be asking higher price than what I paid for it.

this link shows a guy selling the same shotgun for 350$

I saw this thread, decided to take a look at the buysell online I usally go on every 2-3 a week but I havnt been on in a 2 weeks and look what I found. (great tool for finding decent guns, decent prices but some times you find the odd IDIOT)...now I know its prob 350 all together with taxes brand new but why would I buy it used for the same god damn price! its a ugly little gun!

The public are telling their governments they want certain things in economic policy and the governments are giving us those things whether it is good for us or not. Some of these things significantly increase the costs of doing business, make the profits necessary for business to survive harder to come by, and devalue the dolllars being paid for goods. If the same gun, new, now retails for 20-40% more than it did then and you think that is unreasonable and unfair and the "big corporations" are ripping you off, stop and think about the changing conditions in which we live. Perhaps they aren't telling you their guns are worth 20-40% more than they used to be, but that your money is worth fewer guns.

So perhaps it isn't unreasonable for the seller of a used gun to expect more for it now than it would have fetched two or three years ago.

I thought there were more people interested in showing off what they had, than actually selling anything. I have no idea why you would transport and set all that stuff up if you weren't interested in selling anything.
 
The equipment exchange here is a good gauge for the selling price point of items.

If something is btt more than two or three times you can bet it's just not priced in a selling range.

There is a firearm I saw recently for example on another site priced at $900.

I've seen the same model stuck on the EE here for months for $450 without selling.

It's similar at gun shows I've noticed. Firearms I've seen for sale here selling in the $200 range are posted in the $400 range. I guess that is designed so that if the buyer talks the guy down $100 he figures he's got a good deal.

I don't buy anything anymore so it's fun to watch, kind of like a soap opera or reality TV.

Do the same at the gun show. Last year at Kamloops we had a hard time selling any guns, people wanted either the scope only or the stock but not the complete rifle. We took them home added 10 % to the price, consigned them to a local shop and all sold within a week... :)
 
The word used does not compute with some sellers. They think if your not paying the tax thats good enough. I've even seen the odd item cheaper new.

If people are daft enough to pay its gonna happen. :rolleyes:

I've pondered this same question for years....

I guess that's why they call it a Gun "Show" and not a Gun "Sale"...:D

When you see the same dinged up old rifles year after year for $800....it makes you wonder if some of the vendors really are just displaying rather than selling.....

as for asking price of used rifle vs what you paid for them.

I recently bought two stainless 700's, both about 10-12 years old...I know I paid more than what they sold for when new, but it would cost at least 50% more to replace them with new ones at todays prices...

I sure wouldn't sell my house for less than I paid for it 6 years ago...and I wouldn't expect someone to do the same with a rifle..

a Model 70 sold for about $100-$150 in the early 60's......offer that to a guy trying to sell a Pre'64 Model 70 today and he'll think you're nuts.....

If the new price goes up, then so should the used. Its inflation and thats just how it is with everything, not just guns. Should an old single shot .22 go up another $100 because of inflation? No, but any high end or immaculate rifle should be worth a few bucks more in my opinion.
