I would like to purchase a used 20 gauge over / under. The three models I am interested in are: 1) Browning Cynergy Feather - wood model 2) Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon 1 Field 3) Franchi Instinct SL

I am looking for input on what fair used prices would be for these assuming they are in very good to excellent condition. I do not want to over spend and want to make reasonable offers. Thanks.

The two B guns in excellent used condition 1600 to 1800 . the franchi tops 800 .

I am surprised by the price of the Franchi. I had always assumed from their price and association with Beretta/Benelli that they would be quality guns. Is the quality lacking with their guns?

No - The Franchi's are OK. They are just built to a different price point. You may have to spend a bit more than 800$ to get a decent Franchi - maybe closer to 1000$.

$800 tops?? Good luck getting a Franchi instinct SL that is in VG to excellent (as per the OP's post) for $800. These guns are now priced at $1700 new..throw taxes on that and you're at $2000. If you can find one for $800, make sure you're dealing face to face because something tells me you're not getting it if its being "shipped"

They might be priced at $1700 but in my opinion your not getting a $ 1700 gun . it is an upper entry level gun at best . I bought the all steel instinct L 20 ga when they first hit the market . right out of the box the action lever vibrated with loud twang when fired and it had the worst triggers I have ever pulled on a shotgun . with less than 2 flats of skeet loads through it the barrel lug that the fore arm latches to stretched or wore causing the fore arm to come lose . it got moved along very shortly after that . so I guess my experience with the instinct model is a bit jaded .

The Franchi is not by any means worth $1700. If that is what they are asking, they are way overpriced.

Worth it or not, thats the going rate nowadays at retail level.

Could it be that you just got a lemon? This is why I personally never buy anything once it hits the market....not enough time to determine reliability. I much prefer to buy things after all the kinks get worked out. Either way, there are far more people happy with their purchase then unhappy with it. And the guns are still selling so people are clearly still accepting the price tags

I handled a new Instinct SL 20 ga at a store here in Montreal, the sales asked for 1800$ taxes included, but the fore-end stock felt moving a bit under my fingers with a tick sound. Maybe that specific model had a flaw. Very light shotgun but did not feel more expensive or quality than a Yildiz I had, 20ga as well and that was 1000$ less than the Franchi SL.

You're going about this all wrong Patrick. All three guns are problematic for the same reason. The barrels are oriented incorrectly!:p

Agree Rembolt
I bought one also when they came out as I do with many newly released shotguns and it is no longer in the herd. I don't wait to see after introduced how they work out to buy them since if I did many I would not have today in my collection like my 3 1/2 wingmaster, second generation 16ga 1100 & 870 etc etc

The guys that seem to love the instinct unfortunately donot normally seem to have many others to compare them against and most have never had the opportunity to use a comparable higher end shotgun of the type but hey if they are happy to each their own but they are not worth anywhere near 1700 from my experience
:)

Cheers

I ended up going with the Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon. I used it quite a bit this week out in Alberta and have no regrets.....it is very nice to carry. James, if you tilt your head far enough the orientation of the barrels fits your criteria. LOL:p

"Good" & "Used" person to person (i.e. no tax) 60-70% of "new retail" (before tax) is usually considered a fair deal.

Of the 3 ... well, you know which way I'd go., and I'm glad to see you have done the same.
The design of Cynergy is a little out in left field for my taste.

Hope it works out well for you.

As long as I don't have to stick it anywhere!;)
