Hi guys,

Just got my restricted license and got lucky to have purchased a used 2005 production of H&K USP .40cal for a very reasonable price. The current owner said that it has seen around 3000 rounds but the firearm has been very well maintained. It looks like brand new, it's amazingly clean.

I am thinking should I bring this firearm to my gunsmith (i'm close to ellwood) to get it inspected, professionally cleaned and test fire before begin using it myself at the range? Need some insight from all the experts here about this ...

Thanks.
Mario

Hi Mario--

Although 3000 rounds sounds like a lot, it's not that much for a high-quality pistol like the USP, especially one that's been maintained well (and 9mm is not a round that'd cause an excessive amount of wear). I had a Glock with more than 5000 rounds of 9mm fired through it that I didn't do anything special to, and I know there are guys here with many, many more. If it's not showing any unusual signs of wear like a bulged barrel or excessive looseness I'd just fire it.

Mario...I agree with the above posts, as well. Just take it out to your local range, and have fun with it. From there, you'll be able to determine if it needs a visit to a gunsmith.

I also have a USP40, and I think I've put close to 10,000 rounds through mine...I'm not gonna' lie and say that I clean it after every range trip, because I don't. Sometimes it goes right back into the safe after use, and right back to the range for another session, without even being field stripped. Never had an issue...EVER! The USP is a pretty tough gun, and can take a beating.

Let us know how it goes after you've had a chance to shoot yours...all the best.

You will likely be able to fire another 6000- rounds before you would even need a cleaning with the USP. Things to clean would be firing pin channel and extractor.
