Used Mossbergs 535 and 835, decisions...

So I have the opportunity to purchase either a used Mossberg 535, done up in camo, with full, modified, and IC chokes, 28 inch bead sighted barrel.

I also could buy a used Mossberg 835, wood, with the 28 inch overbored barrel and modified and Turkey choke (the extra tight one).

They're both around the same price, and I know that with the 835 I won't be able to fire off any slugs. I like the overbore because it gives me a bit more of an advantage with the bigger birds. Is the cammo and slug ability worth sacrificing the overbore?

I'd be hunting deer and turkey, maybe some waterfowl.
Anyone with experience have any wisdom to share? (Please keep the discussion to the Mossbergs, there aren't any Benelli or BPS in my price range)

That 835 is primarily over bored so it shoots like a 10ga with 3.5" loads for waterfowl hunting. I have one and never use it except for deer because mine came with a slug barrel.

If you're going to be using it mostly for deer and turkey, but only maybe waterfowl, I'd go with the 535 since the 835 is mostly a goose gun.

I have owned both. Hated the 835 from how it shouldered, functioned and kicked like a mule. The 535 had a rattling forearm but fitted and worked for me just fine.

First, which one fits you better? All other considerations should come AFTER that.

I own a Mossberg 500, and a Mossberg 835, I've never owned a 535.

The 535 is going to be more flexible. You can find replacement barrels easier if you need them.

Camo is put on a gun more to catch the hunter than to hide the gun. I wouldn't put a lot of emphasis on having camo in your decision making.

If you buy the 835, you will probably need a slug-barrel, which you could avoid buying with the 535, assuming you're going to hunt deer. Granted, deer season is probably either over, or almost over so you won't have to worry for several months, but, on an 835 they can be hard to find. 500, and 535 barrels are much easier to find by comparison.

Over-bore is NICE. Make no mistake! My 835 recoils more softly than my 500! I can fire 3.5 inch shells all day out of an 835, and it just feels like a firm push, rather than a punch in the shoulder. The most I've ever put through my 500 are 2 3/4 shells - I shoot trap & skeet, and usually by the third round, I've had enough shooting my 500. I could go round after round with my 835.

I have the 535ats, love it. Forearm rattles a bit but the finish is tough and it fits me really well. I have well over 1000 rounds through er and no issues. My only quelm is that I can't find a slug barrel in the same camo.

Mossberg 535 (The "3 in 1") - bird barrel, rifled barrel with cantilever rail, and turkey barrel. Came with a full, modified, IC, and the "xx full turkey" choke. 3 1/2" chamber. Plug removes easily. I have shot 2 3/4" and 3 1/2" shells through her...no issues. It's a great gun and the barrels speak for themselves.

If you look carefully you can see the sasquatsch I shot with this thing in one of the photos.

I've got 535 combo as per previous post and absolutely love it. Never a misfire or ejection problem. Very light compare to other semi-auto. Turkey and slug barrels are making this gun one stop shop. The bad thing I have to sell it just because I stopped hunting.

Thanks for the input all. I went with the 835 since I've got buddies with 535s. Interested to see how the overbore works. I figure we can compare, and worst comes to worst I'll 'borrow' theirs often.

Great to see that time used by many good, helpful people giving you advice wasn't wasted. :D

thanks for the photos and the info that is the exact gun i am going to buy. it will be my first gun and i have done a lot of research and settled for this one
