I took a quick look at a used Python today, and am considering purchasing it. The bluing looks good, with a fine line on the cylinder, the grips are Pachmayer, and it is supposedly a late 70s, early 80s gun, with the red plastic insert on the front ramp. I have owned high end single action revolvers before, but I am wondering if there is anything specific to look for when looking over a used Python?

The first thing is to make sure that it is not re-blued. This can be difficult to tell, but look at the edges that would have the most wear. If it is re-blued, then sometimes it would be off colour. Another thing is to check the timing. I usually check this on all revolvers.

Slowly bring the hammer back to fully cocked, then while holding the hammer back, pull the trigger to rotate the cylinder into battery a little more. Any more than a fraction of an inch is wear. Now dry fire it in double action, and while holding the trigger down see if the cylinder rotates further into battery. Wear again, different parts. Either situation (assuming excessive movement) means a Colt friendly smith will need to adjust the timing. - dan
