After checking out Python prices, I now want to look at a 586 in a 6-inch barrel. The new ones are a bit over $900; what would a representative price be for one in very nice shape with the recommended modifications by the company?

That sounds about right to me. I paid 520 for a 586 no dash with the "M" stamp last year and think I got a good deal.
Yes, that would be a good deal! I would agree with graydog's price range of $550 to $750.

I think all models after the -2 have the bushing mod so you should be good to go with any of them, or any -1s or "no dash" models with the "M" stamp. FWIW I owned a "no dash" for more than 20 years without having the mod done, firing more than 15,000 .38s and 1000 .357s without a problem so if you do find a "no dash" without the "M" I woudn't necessarily say no.

Hmm I just looked at mine. No dash no 'M'.

Can someone tell me in layman's terms what's potentially wrong without a 'fix'?
(I paid 650$ for it for what that's worth.)

That's maybe a smidge high...but if it hasn't been shot much it's a good price. The problem with the early L-Frames was that some would bind up when firing .357 loads (the primer would flow into the firing pin bushing). It's not a safety issue (unless it's a self-defense gun) and as I mentioned above I did not experience the problem. My Dad, who had a -1 did have the problem and had (I think) Charlton's fix it a few years ago. I sold mine a couple of years ago...it was s/n AFF37xx. It's not yours is it?

Not the same one. I picked mine up in Arnies in Prince Albert I'll say a year ago or slightly more. I figured it was slightly overpriced, but it came with wood grips and some trigger work done once upon a time. Just felt right in my hands!

I guess that explains what happened once. I had one type of 357 ammo, can't remember the brand but it was lighter 125(ish?) grain stuff. Couldn't get the cylinder open. I assumed they were just extra hot loads since blazer and 158grain AE ran through it just fine.

Thanks for the information!
