It's gone now, quite quickly too I think, but I'm wondering if anyone with knowledge powers looked at the used Webley & Scott that was briefly available at the above big box here. It was in overall good condition, a 12 G with 28" barrels, and was being sold for $2400.00 with the original case. I only looked at it briefly and then fled the store before I could spend again, did not get what the fixed chokes were nor the chamber length specs (the salesman didn't know), but it seemed nice and tight and of a good weight for upland hunting. Did I miss a deal?

Webley and Scott made a huge quantity of guns over the years, for themselves and for a lot of other people who put their name on the guns. And they made everything from field grade "keepers" guns to sidelock Best guns. So without a little more info, impossible to even guess at whether it was a deal or not. But with the absolute collapse of the used gun market in Great Britain for everything but the best of the best, I would suggest that at $2400, you didn't miss a "deal". I know one deal that got made at the Double Gun Classic was from a well known English maker, with gorgeous wood and lots of engraving including some very nice game scenes, in "take it out and shoot it today" condition that changed hands at less than half that Cabelas price.

As I expected. And the gun in question, a regular grade boxlock, didn't pass my Canadian 'can I use it for hunting?' test- the length of pull was quite short, shorter than I've seen in a store gun, making me think it had been cut down and shot by a teenager or a woman. But it did sell right away, I think. The thing is that so few of these guns show up where us normal folks can find them.

Intersurplus just received a pile of English guns, including quite a few Webley and Scott. As I understand matters, lead shot has been banned in the UK, so a lot of older guns are being exported. You should be able to get a comparative value to the Cabelas gun.

Cabelabasspro is not where I normally look to find huge deals, although I did once or twice or maybe three times. In the case of the W&S, I did pass on it but out of curiosity was hoping someone with expertise had looked at or perhaps actually bought the gun in question. If these 'surplused' English doubles start showing up, I hope someone will post the info as to where.

Was it an original Webley and Scott or the new Turkish made gun of the same name? The new Turkish guns have real bone color case hardening and a case.

I believe it was an original, but am not an expert. Although I do think I can tell if something is new, and this gun was not new, I would say at least 40 YO.

Was just stating that cuz my buddy had once bought a new Webley and Scott sxs and was excited he got a new Webley and believed it was an English made gun. It was a well built gun from what I could tell but it was made in turkey. I had looked into a real sidelock ou made by the new company of the same name but I ended up buying a vintage sxs instead. Not everyone realises the name is being used by a different company now and in you post you just mentioned used so I wasn't sure

The prices that I see estimated at Holt's are enough to make me question why a guy doesn't buy a crate of them and sell them over here. Things that they are absolutely indifferent about we slobber over at gun shows.

Another W&S SxS at Cabelas Ottawa, looks like a pattern: a gun is sold and another comes in. This one is somewhat heavier than the first one I looked at, and undoubtedly newer or less used, 28" barrels and a more regular length of pull. Engraved 'Birmingham.' Sales men knew nothing about it and they didn't want it taken down (ie, apart) to check the chokes or chamber length because it's an incredibly valuable British firearm. Sort of the usual thing at that store unless I get someone who's actually interested in making a sale. Anyway I wasn't going to buy, just wanted a detail or two for here. The gun is there until it's gone and as I say there may be more, based on my new notion that Bass Pro has made a large buy from the UK and is trickling them onto the Canadian market.

Easy way to find out if it is English made original is the stampings , you should be able to tell if it is new or older Also check
the muzzle, if it has screw in chokes I would suspect it is not a vintage W&S.
Regardless, if the salesman will not let me take a gun apart , I'm talking to the manager and asking " why not"?
Same as taking a bolt out of a rifle .
I have had salesmen not let me do that, then I tell them in no uncertain terms what I think about their BS, used car salesman tactics before I tell them they just lost a sale and walk!
