USGI Barrel Pitting?

Hi all,

I have a surplus USGI barrel. It was pretty filthy but I've cleaned it up nicely, not installed it yet however.

The rifling looks pretty good however a couple of inches in from the muzzle there is what appears to be a reasonably large area of what I assume is pitting.

Any thoughts or advice?

I would find a better barrel to install. You will be spending the money, so try and find a better barrel
 
Do you have a tool too see what your throat and muzzle erosion is?

These parts kits were once military rifles, used by the IDF. During the time they were in service, the Israelis had at least 1 war......

Not all of the parts kits came to Canada in useable shape.... I've had a look at quite a few parts kits.... A few barrels were not worth reusing....
 
That is not pitting it is more like crack or a chip in your barrel, it is far enough away from the chamber it might not explode, not sure about the affect on accuracy since it is cutting into the rifling. if it long enough have a smith cut in down to 18.5" and recrown it, however the cost might be too much to save a surplus barrel
 
Ah, that put's a bit of a damper on things. Unfortunately I don't have a tool to take a look and I'm still pretty green when it comes to knowing what to look for.

It was sold as-is but I could potentially reach out to the seller and see what they say, perhaps they're willing to swap it out.

Thanks for the input! As an aside - how do the Norinco barrels circa 2013 generally perform vs USGI?
 
Are you sure you're not seeing the gas port? Stick a 1/16 drill bit through to gas port to see if that's what it is. Norinco barrels shoot about the same as USGI barrels and are also chrome lined. If you use a Norinco barrel, you have to use a Norinco gas cylinder lock and flash hider castle nut though.
 
Are you going to be installing this yourself, or paying someone to put it together?

It's not a safety hazard and being that it's neither at the throat or the muzzle, it probably won't affect accuracy much. If assembling it doesn't put you out much, I would just slap it together and see if it meets your needs.
 
I was looking at a couple of options - either in one of the M14 classes/workshops or getting a professional to do it. Considering the current state of affairs I'll probably get someone else to do it.
