USGI M1 Carbine rebarrelled to 18.75" , How to change Status to Non-Restricted?

Hi All,

I recently had and M1 carbine rebarrelled with an 18.75" barrel. I called the firearms center and spoke someone, it was bit like blasphemy in church suggesting I wanted to have the rifle not restricted anymore. I got the required info on what I need to prove but, has anyone gone through this process and did they make it difficult?

It's easiest to go through a gunsmith with a verifier number. If you do the work yourself with no verifier number, they give you all sorts fo grief.
 
I called and reported the change of status due to the barrel change (like you are supposed to by Law) and the RCMP tech tried telling me what I was doing was illegal, you can't change the status of a restricted to nonrestricted and he knew because he was also a fire arms instructor! LOL

I politely as possible told him he needed more training and asked for a Supervisor who was more than helpful with the status change. She asked me a few questions about where I got the new barrel asked me to measure it and did I still have the old barrel. Few weeks later got the NR cert. in the mail.

Don't know how it would go these days but I would expect at least some resistance to getting it done but don't give up!
 
I have a Plainfield machine m1 carbine that I would like to get changed to NR so would be interested in where you got the barrel from and if the reclassification goes smoothly or if they give you grief
 
Funny what a difference one half inch makes . Only in Liberial Canada . I have a 19 inch non restricted Great little gun have fun with it. Thanks for the post makes me feel good.
 
Tradex NR M1 carbine barrels are very good quality, but you need to know that they are in "white" condition (need to be parkerized), and don't have a piston & nut. They will fit a USGI receiver, but require a slight modification to fit a Plainfield or I-J. They don't fit on a Gen III Universal.

Best to have a gunsmith that knows M1 carbines to do a re-barrel job, and can get it de-registered as a restricted firearm.
 
Manteo97 is too modest to say that he does it as well (installation as well as making non restricted barrels)
