Hungry ...
I've still got most of my #### left ...
However, this is probably because,
whenever screwing around with Chinese M-14 clones,
I always put safety first.
[And no, I did NOT name my #### "safety".]
With EVERY Chinese I get, I ALWAYS swap in a USGI recoil spring .. but this is more for reliability than safety. No #### shortening potential here.
BUT,
I ALWAYS check the headspace and left bolt lug engagement and firing pin /receiver bridge timing of EVERY Chinese that goes through my hands.
And for good measure, I'll check to see if the barrel is still held on by "DRAW" rather than just dangling there by the little ol set screw.
I could tell you horrible stories of potentially #### shortening issues I have discovered doing this. However, this was mostly with the old [OLD ] Chinese clones. The original SHINY Norincos and Polytechs had, IMHO, about 1/3 of their bolts way too soft, and also had the left lug cut wrong. Also discovered one Chinese Norinco receiver so hard, it SHATTERED when dropped off a 3 ft high work bench onto a concret floor [ don't ask ].
The new ones I've seen have improved significantly on bolt hardness, and left bolt lug fit.
BUT,
on most of the brand new Norincos I've checked recently, headspace is still way more than .308 NO GO and sometimes even more than 7.62 NATO NO GO. Of course, if used ONLY with NATO spec BALL ammo, this headspace will probably be safe.
Probably.
Most likely
Which is why I usually end up throwing in a GI bolt.
Just to make sure my #### retains it's magnificent original dimensions.
As usual. YMMV.
