There's a fair sized gap between the receiver and the rear of the stock I picked up. What would be the best way to build up that section to get it flush?

Here's some pics to show what I'm looking at.

I'm also wondering if someone has a pic of a stock with the op rod guide pin fill-in so I can see how it compares to what I have.

Thanks guys

That gap is normal. You can bed the heel area, but its not really neccessary unless you are building a match rifle.

Look at the M14 FAQ thread at the top of the Main Battle Rifle Forum.I have pics there showing the retaining pin mod.

If you have a Stock Norinco action in a non-modified USGI stock, then you will have to modify the stock in the retaining pin area to keep that pin from "walking" out. You can do the quick fix and glue/epoxy a section of popsicle stick there, or build it up with JB weld like I usually do.The JB weld option is more involved and time consuming, but I think it looks better and won't fall out.

here is a close up of a oprod guide pin fill job on a glass stock, the dished out flat area at front of mag well is optional and a lot more work as it must be clearanced for oprod and oprod guide.

i use flat stiff cardboard, covered with a smooth flat layer of clear packing tape on both sides of stock at this area. the packing tape allows easy removal of the cardboard and leaves a nice flat clean surface. the pieces will just pop off. i raise this area level to the receiver line... selector hole uses same method with cardboard sides/dams. using the cardboard allows anice even top edge if you tape them inplace properly. I use goop 2 part marine epoxy for my fill jobs... but i hear jbweld works too. I've had a couple stocks where the jbweld inserts popped free of the stock in later use.
here is close up of action surface area/selector hole fill. you must leave a 10degree bevel to the side edges of the stock to allow receiver to bed properly.
