Hey,
I took my M14 hunting this week and it was raining quite a lot and the walnut stock got a little beating. It is in great need of a layer or two of oil.

What type of oil should I use in order to keep it in its rather original "USGI" look?

Thanks,
Alex

Not tung oil finish. Pure tung oil. However, using tung oil will require refinishing the stock. Regular Boiled Linseed Oil(BLO) will do nicely.

I use BLO and I like it. Went hunting today and the snow was coming down and it seemed to hold up pretty good. But I heard that Tung Oil was a little better at water resistance. But to his is own. I use BLO mainly because its what was originally put on the Enfield stock (well it was raw linseed oil but BLO is close) If you do go with BLO, for the first few coats, mix the oil with equal amounts of turpentine. The turp will thin out the oil allowing it to seep in a little deeper. When you do the first few coats, use a brush and slather the stuff on, wait about 20min then rub, RUB the stock with a rag. Then just RUB straight BLO on with a rag for the final few coats. You will have to touch it up every month or two, but it takes like 5 minuets so its not labor intensive.

Use marine grade linseed oil. It dries from the inside out, not outside in like regular linseed oils. marine grade is used on boats.
