Hi guys,

I just installed a USGI synthetic stock on my bro's rifle. I had to swap in the rear sling swivel and the butt plate (both Norc). The bottom screw that runs through the swivel went in no prob, but the top screw is too short and will not be seated. Is this normal? Any suggestions? I am contemplating getting a longer screw and screwing it into the stock.

:dancingbanana:

Hmmm? I don't think the US Army had different butt plate screws for the wood and synthetic stocks. Parts commonality and all. It is possible that the top hole has been deepened by someone pushing the bottom screw in too deep by mistake.

So, you have to somehow strengthen the material to grab the screw. Sounds like a job for 2-part epoxy and PAM no stick food spray as mold release. Or, embed a nut for a suitably long/medium/short replacement bolt.

There is supposed to be a nut (actually a spring steel thingy but I used a nut) in the top portion to hold the screw, it doesn't thread into the stock itself. You'll see a recess where the nut fits.

Home Depot solution (lots cheaper).... # 8 x 32 tpi x 2" or 1 3/4" long will do the job. Don't pay the $ 8.00 from Numrich plus shipping for a $ 1.00 screw / bolt combination, or else yer #### will fall off.

Cheers,
Barney

Or #10 x 32 I think...if I recall correctly?

The USGI screw is a stepped screw.

That's the answer I was trying to remember!

Winz: I think you could be right. My memory is fading. My wife reminds me everyday that being a high school teacher results in total insanity and she is right.

Oh no Hungry! Don't say that, the antis are already running around like :runaway: :runaway: by you saying high school teacher and insanity in the same sentence :p :p

Your school year is almost over though! I'll have to see if I can make it to your class this summer and learn from of your old tricks for the M14...and yes, I love that whatever works theme....#8, #10...as long as the nut is the same, it's all good to go right?
