Got a usgi walnut stock for my Norc m14. Do I just slap it in the walnut and shoot? Seems like its snug. Only concern is the small gap between wood and reciever and the some mod or pin thing(if true). Anyone know what I should do, can I shoot it like that or must it be modded. I just want a stock I can drop it in and out for cleaning without worrying. Great forum by the way. Cheers!

You're probably talking about the retaining pin for the spring guide. Its sideways movement is supposed to be blocked by the stock. You don't want it rattling out of position and letting the spring guide pop out of position. You will have to see if there is excessive space, and if there is, epoxy a piece of thin wood like a popsicle stick inside where it will but up against.

As for the general fit of the receiver in the stock, that's a somewhat complex issue. If the trigger guard locks down with some tension, the gun is probably operable safely, but you will want to check the operation of the trigger as described in the FAQ at the top of this subforum. There's more to it than that if you want best accuracy, but safe operation is first.

The pin that holds the operating spring rod is held in place by a little extra thickness of wood on the Norinco stock. In a USGI stock, like your walnut one, that clearance is wider where some go faster parts used to fit. The pin will back out of its hole and cause the operating spring rod to jam internally.

The welfare gunsmithing solution is to mix up some 2 part epoxy and glue a short bit of Popsicle stick in there. It doesn't show outside (unless a really knowledgible person looks closely with the right light) and keeps your rifle serviceable.

There is a wealth of free gunsmiting information on the interweb. Try searching for Lee Emmerson's on line reference manual. He posts various places as 'different'. Secondly, read through the sticky notes on this section of the forum. Almost all your Norinco questions will be answered there.
