When using a semi-auto 22RF for hunting upland birds, is there a magazine capacity limit in Saskatchewan?

Thanks

I was curious and researched a little bit. I found nothing, I would say this is because hunting birds with a .22 is just a bad idea. You willl have a hard time hitting the birds as most of the action is in the air and a hit will probably not kill/bring the bird down so you can retreive it: leaving injured animals. Please just use a shotgun. Here is some info I found on the environment canada web site for Saskatchewan. Give those guys a call and they will probably tell you the same thing.

"The information presented here is a summary of the law. For complete information on fines, general prohibitions, permitted hunting methods and equipment, the need to retrieve birds, restrictions on using bait, description of hunting districts, and other restrictions on hunting, contact:"

He's not talking about hitting birds in the air with a .22.... headshots on the ground only. Lots of guys do this... probably a faster kill than with a shotgun!

I was hunting in the Porcupine Hills, and all of the birds I shot were on the ground. I was using a 20ga, and taking head shots. A 22 would be far more effective for this kind of hunting.

Once they take to wing, I leave them be...I hate picking pellets and feathers out of my food.

No problem, thanks for the help. I've never tried to shoot a grouse on the wing with a 22...I got a pigeon on the wing last year, but that was more luck than good management.

there is no mag capacity limits on semi-auto rimfires. this is a FEDERAL issues, so will not chage province to province.

I'd like to try grouse hunting with a .17HMR, then you could pick 'em off at 150+ yards easy! I don't think much skill would be involved there, as long as you have a straight-shooting rifle and decent scope........:D

22 cal is the only way for grouse. no pellets to pick out. 10 round clip is handy if you find multiple birds. one of the best things on a hunting trip is fresh grouse for lunch.

Thanks for the info. I knew there wasn't a mag capacity limit for plinking/gophers, etc, but I wasn't sure about hunting.

Regarding the 17 HMR @ 150 yrds, you'd be hard pressed to get 150 yard visibility in the Northern Saskatchewan Forrest, unless you were hunting clear cuts. The grouse I'm shooting at would be less than 50 yards, probably closer to 25 yards.

PS - they sure are noisey little buggers, stomping around in the bush. Sounds like sasquachs line dancing.

Shooting birds on the ground is NOT hunting! I know lots of people do it, but just call it harvesting. Hunting is a sport, harvesting is not, IMHO.

Plus, trying to wing shoot with a single projectile can be dangerous... where is your bullet going to land?

Um, we're back to the same old debate. It's legal to hunt upland birds with a 22, same as it's legal to bait bears in Saskatchewan, and use dogs to hunt in other provinces. You don't like it, don't do it, I couldn't care less.

Hunting is a sport,

Hunting is not a sport, it's an outdoor activity that involves the killing of wild creatures, Soccer is a sport!!!!!

As far as shooting ditch chickens on the ground, do it all the time, they always taste good in camp!!!

Federal mag capasity has NOTHING to do with Provincal Hunting Regs. Alot of places (I think NB, though can't be sure) have a limit of 5 rounds on at least centerfire rifles for hunting. It's why some guys got thoes 5 round clips for their M1 Garands. Now, you can still have an Enfield with a 10 rounder, but it better not be full. I've never pesonally had trouble with my 15 round 22 or any of the bolt centerfires here in NF but I've never checked the regs. I could be in the wrong, but no CO that's checked me has ever said anything.

On another note,

Oh great, the ol' shooting birds on the ground debate:rolleyes: . It's legal and its fun. And it beats them up less than a shot gun. The only way I will shoot Grouse with a shotgun is if I'm hunting Watedfowl and see one along the way. Onthe same note, I shoot waterfowl on the ground/water too as that is also legal here. Have a feild day with that statement.

To each their own! Shoot the runners if you want.....
Still a free country last time I checked. And I did say it was just MHO.

But I still say wing shooting with a single projectile can be dangerous!

I think 2f2f was wondering if there was an equivillent rule to the 3 round capacity for migratory game birds that applies to upland birds. To my knowledge, the answer is no.
