I'm sure this must have come up before, but my use of the search function didn't yield any results.

The manual for the Ruger 10/22 states that you can fire the rifle without a magazine. But I say "Good luck getting your fingers in there to put a round in the chamber"

It's not so much that I want to do it (I bought a semi-auto for a reason), but rather that the manual states that you can do it so I want to try. I'm sure there is a trick to put the round in the chamber by hand - what is it? :)

I'll try it with the rifle upside down next time out at the shooting place. Thanks!

On page 18 of the manual it states:

The rifle can be used as a single shot rifle in the absence of a magazine or for
safety or training purposes. To do so, follow step 1, p. 16. Then load a cartridge
into the chamber
, and follow steps 6 and 7, p. 16, disregarding the magazine.
Engage the safety between shots.

Tricky Tricky :)

It takes a bit of a knack, but single rounds can be fed into the chamber through the ejection port.
You have to be standing up, though. You point the barrel down, hold the round between thumb and finger. You place the nose of the bullet into the chamber, and roll it into place, then close the bolt.
Even more fiddly with shorts, but it can be done.

Cheers

I guess some people might want to do it as a training method.

For me, just because the manual claimed it could be done.

I'll try it that way too trevj. Might be a challenge of coordination :)

I've done it from the ejection port and the mag well just because the manual said I could. I'll have to try it with some shorts to see whether it can cycle any of them...

It can be done. I went up north camping one time and forgot my mags. Had to load them through the ejection port. I was also shooting shorts out of my VTR the other day, and they did not have enough power to cycle the bolt for the next round. lol Note to self, all shorts are for the anschutz bolt.

It would also cause carbon build up in te chamber. If u do that enough times with a short 22, the next time you try feeding LR in the chamber. The brass might not sit all the way in and cause an explosion in the action.

Back to topic. like someone mentioned. The manual says the gun could fire without mag is a safety warning. I've tried( to see if different brand of ammo would fit in dlask chamber) and found that the ejector might not hook onto the rim if u feed the round directly into the chamber. If u want to do it as a trainer for first time shooter. Load up the mag , insert then chamber a round the pull the mag out. Only way to insure the round sit on the bolt like it's suppose to.
