Using 12 Gauge Slugs for Bear Defense? Here's a slug review you'll want to watch.

the score slugs and challenger slugs are gualandi slugs, not brenneke. they're about as close as you're gonna get to a true original brenneke; solid slug, harder alloy, attached wad, flat or rounded nose leading into a sharp shoulder as opposed to foster slugs with a rounded shoulder into a hollow point. i've found rottweil brenneke classic 2 3/4" and brenneke 2 3/4" short magnums at reliable gun in van and as well as rottweil's exact slugs which are a gualandi slug. i like the brennekes better, hit harder and a little better accuracy from my mossberg. when i'm out solo camping and bushwacking in the central and south chilcotin mountains, where if a grizz see's you or smells you they will certainly try to eat you, my gun is loaded up with the brenneke short magnums. if i could find the brenneke black magics, those would be in my gun

bumping this thread because bad things happen sometimes, and sometimes they are preventable.

Site sponsor located in Calgary sells what I think are Brenneke slugs.

Maybe they can comment here on them...

Thanks alpining! The Challenger aren't Brenneke, but they are darn good for bear defense. We *will* be getting in Rio Brennekes this year. Contact me if you'd like to have some set aside when they show up.

Wouldn't it be easier to just drive away? That's an odd regulation, if true.

While I am not up on all the regulations not all vehicles can just easily driven away. Say you are on a quad/sled with gloves on and the keys are in a pocket. A loaded firearm is quicker to retrieve than keys and trying to start and drive away under fight or flight distress.

There is no Federal Vital-Shock Flight Control 00Buck, in Canada, to my knowledge. Cabela's told me they wouldn't have any until this summer and that was in November 2013.

Ellwood Epps has plenty. Picked up a few boxes about a week ago, as well as some Challenger slugs.

Truck stuck, parked not running, somebody else in trouble close by, don't feel like loading/unloading every time you get in/out, sudden attack while on quad/sled where you can't just drive away. I could go on and on...

Things run a little different in Alberta....that's why we live here :)

Excellent video Brobee, just sub'd to your channel also. :)

Not to hijack, but for those who were asking how the Lee slugs compare, I did a comparison using water jugs:
If I can get a hold of some other styles I will try them out this spring as well.

( curseyou don't bother wasting your precious time watching. )

Good video those lee slugs are very impressive.

Great videos as usual, Brobee... haven't checked on this thread for a while and glad I did... and that damned voice of yours, far too relaxing and pleasant :)

Also, that information from RedBadger about the Gualandi vs Brenneke was very interesting; thank you for that sir/madam.

Hey Brobee, if i sent you a box of Brenneke 3 inch magnum Black Magics, would you do a ammo test on them, similar to the one you did with the Royal Brenneke.

I also have some 2 3/4 Rotweil Brennekes that I can send to test.

Hey there,

I appreciate the offer however while trying to continue to make ends meet full time in the Alberta Oil Patch Apocalypse, full time work on a Master's degree, hitting the hills with my two girls who are starting to show an interest in hunting, and a rare day with the wife at the sporting clay range, unfortunately I won't have any time this year (or next) to fire up the gel factory for terminal ballistics tests.

I might be able to film a #4 buckshot close range deer hunting video this coming fall, but even that might be a stretch.

Cheers,

Brobee
