Using 12 Gauge Slugs for Bear Defense? Here's a slug review you'll want to watch.

guy is a troll, prob a returnee. just read his posts.

Not a troll. Just cranky as a personality type. If you will allow me to elaborate and rephrase my criticism into a more constructive and palatable form;

This video, like most you tube productions would benefit immensly from stronger editing. Not only making them more concise but actually focusing on the solutions rather than dwelling on the problems would be more helpful.

This is how high level management meetings are in the corporate world. Concise, and focused on solutions.

15 seconds to explain and demonstrate the flaw of overly soft slugs would have been adequate. Then 45 seconds of better slugs (what brand and why) and voila!

I did not mean to insult the creator of the video. The topic is interesting and I applaud the effort, I just forget my manners when behind a keyboard. Sorry.

Well if you are not willing to make some videos yourself, dont complain about the quality of the videos others make. In this case the video was well made in my opinion. Unless you can do better, dont complain.

Put up or shut up.

Brenneke or Gualandi type {like Challenger} slugs FTW.

Soft Fosters, especially those with a "hollowpoint" and/or that hit at magnum velocities at close range, can be iffy at best and often fail structurally and make you frown.

I'd imagine a .243, 25-06, 257 , would penetrate better but I will honestly still take that slug , just what I would feel comfortable with , 5 quick slugs from a 12 ga would make me feel okay about it.

When it comes to dangerous game/defense loads, penetration is absolutely king. These slugs only offering 14" of penetration in gel would fail miserably when trying to bust the shoulder on an attacking grizzly.

+1. I knew slugs were hollow based, but didn't realize how thin walled the Foster slugs were. I am looking forward to more testing to see if any of the slugs actually provide the penetration required to be considered adequate for animal defense use.

OP, are you able to test any handloads with the Lee key drive slug or the Lyman slug that looks like a big .177 pellet?

This production was a waste of my time. I don't care about problems. I only want solutions. Give me a better slug. I am curious how we'll challenger slugs fare in gelatin, but not enough to watch any more of this video series.

While I'm glad you apologized, there's really nothing constructive in your 2nd post, either. The video is short enough for anyone without extreme ADHD to watch and gain knowledge from. You talk about solutions, but identifying the problem is the first step in finding a solution. The maker of the video has said he will do further testing and release a video relating to better constructed slugs. You get FREE information released in a quality video and it's not good enough because the video series isn't complete yet? Grow up.

PS: This is CGN, and nobody cares how high-level management meetings are held... because this isn't a high-level management meeting and nobody is taking home six figures from a youtube video. Durrrrrrrrrrrr...

I load those home cast slugs that look like giant 177 pellets. The lead is quite hard, so they might shatter before they expand.

Since penetration is so important, i suspect a sabot round, with less frontal area, would be better, so long as it did not flatten or shatter.

Testing would be required before I could trust any load I thought I might need for real defense.

I've heard that at least some of the sabot slugs are capable of exiting a big bear the long way, but the full diameter dangerous game oriented hard slugs seem to be up to snuff when it comes to close range animal defense.

There must be a reason that most of the folks who pack a shotgun in big bear country {like Alaskan wildlife officers} load them with Brennekes or the like.

Its a .50 cal handgun bullet for the .500 S&W, has the crimping cannelure and all. Guys behind counters are just paid to sell you stuff. He did his job. They will fire from a smooth bore, then tumble.

anyone use these? http://www.hornady.com/store/12-GA-SST-Slug-300gr-SST/ I just picked up a box thinking they would be a good choice but the guy behind the counter never told me they can only be used in rifled barrels only?!?!? fawk!

so would they still be effective close range? guess ill just go out and shoot some stumps and find out LOL

Good video.
I'm interested to see how the others perform.

Will you be testing the new Score slugs?

I just picked up a case of 1oz and a case of 1 1/8oz.

I'd like to see how deep they penetrate, but I'm not expecting great results. The lead itself looks like it may be a bit harder, but the hollow point seems more aggressive than the Super X. Bigger, deeper cavity.

I might cut a couple open when I get home and see what the whole slug looks like.

Not really. Its a spitzer bullet, rear heavy and designed for gyroscopic stabilization (being spun by the rifling) in order to fly straight and not tumble. Same deal for tracking straight while traversing flesh. They start to tumble fairly soon after leaving the bore. I wouldn't trust them let alone use them on any animal if fired from a smoothbore. The Hornady FTX bullet is pretty lightly constructed as it is, and is intended for deer.
