A very knowledgeable hunter gave me a home made rattle bag. Very interesting. Problem is she is not around right now and I have never used one. Any help or suggestions for using it effectively would be appreciated.

:D

just roll it in your hands, putting pressure on it and quick back and forth motions will give loud cracks from the bag sounding like antlers being bashed together.

I advise not rattling very long, like 1 minute tops. Put the rattle bag down and gun/bow up and be ready. Bucks usually come from the downwind and will be on full alert looking for the other bucks, can make for a hard shooting situation if your on the ground and not much cover secluding you.

Yep.... also, when you start put the bag in one hand and then clap your hands together... this simulates antler engagement....

Just like DVX said, do it in 5-6 seconds spurts, rattle, wait, rattle, wait.... for about 1 minute..... then wait 20 minutes before you do it again....

I might add that this is the ideal time to stretch and get comfy for the next 20 minutes of quiet. Worked fine for me last year...IIRC it took about an hour to convince a young buck to get into our shooting lane, goofy bugger kept moving about 30 meters every time I rattled.
