I was told that you can't use a rifle scope on a shotgun because the recoil knocks it out of alignment. I couldn't see this as being true there are some larger calibre rifles that have some serious kick.

Does anyone here use a standard rifle scope on their shotgun (with rifled barrel or smooth bore) ?

I really don't think it matters what type of scope you use on what gun. After a number of shots out of anything with some decent recoil, that scope will likely need a click or 2 to fine tune it. I say, buy what ya like and mount it!

Quackhead is right. You will find that a drilled and tapped reciever will make your scope mount much more solid than one of the saddle mounts available. Some will disagree, but after that if you want to remove the scope for a bit , it's just a matter of putting in the proper plug screws, and your back to a regular shotgun. The scope will have to be checked for alignment after it's reinstalled.

I wouldn't worry about the recoil knocking the sight out of whack... I'd more worry about the recoil giving you a good case of "scope head". (a nice semi-circular gouge in your forehead)
Eye relief is generally quite a bit more generous on shotgun scopes for this reason.

i was going to bring this up as well

I used an old low power Bushnell scope (was previously on a lever .308) on a cantilever barrel Remington 11-87
with no problems. As was stated above beware of your eye relief. If you have a scope on hand and want to use it, go ahead and mount it and have fun.

Good point about the eye relief

I use a Bushnell Banner 3x9x40 on my 20 gauge. It's mounted in Burris Zee rings. It's a fairly cheap scope, but it's bright and clear and seems to do the job.

I have the following scopes mounted on 12g's

Leupold LPS 1.5-6x42 30mm in tactical rings and base on my Benelli SBE II

Aimpoint 2x 2moa red dot on my Remington 11-87 in 30mm rings

Tasco Titan 1.5-6x42 30mm on my Remington 11-87 fully rifled cantilever barrel

All work perfectly and are ideal for their application.
