using an SKS for coyote hunting

I'm going to put my two bits in here, and say that the Sks is a bad choice. The Sks shoots somewhere between a 3-6 moa. At two hundred meters, that's 6-12 inch accuracy, assuming you make a perfect shot. Umm... yeah, that's not a humane kill distance for that rifle. Inside 100 meters, just barely, but most agree that the average shot you will get is outside that. Be a good hunter, go for bang, flop, or wait until you have what you need to do that.

my russain sks gets around 2" groups at 100 with my reloads works good enough for deer would be good enough for coyote out to 100.not everybody live is Alberta or Saskatchewan were everybody needs to take mile long shots with their uber magnum  northern Ontario is nothing but thick brush id think most of Quebec is the same

Yup. Moved to Saskatchewan. Spent the first fall trying to figure out how to sneak up on a deer. Still haven't figured that out but got a nice 30-06 with scope now.

Just throwing this out there as well, and I have no idea on the hunting regs in Quebec, but I know in Alberta you can blast away at yotes with pretty much anything you want. While in NL you can only use a centre fire .22 cal. So before you take the SKS just make sure it's a legal choice in QC. It wouldn't be in NL because "we could be out poaching moose and caribou with it"

You got there before I could. I've been looking for a good precision rifle in .223 for coyotes. HAS to be .223, because that's what I'll need whenever I get the chance to returned to the Promised Land. Lol

The worst thing about that calibre restriction is that it hasn't done crap to stop the poachers. Now all the by's just carry 22-250's and use those to bushwack moose. Poor gut-shot and bullet-riddled Bullwinkles....

Short sighted gun law making things worse? Nah, never happen...

Now we need MAGNUMS FOR COYOTES?? So, then we'll need .500 Tyrannasaurs for deer next year??.

He did ask which of the firearms in his sig line he should use. The 300 makes the most sense of his current rifles. And the Tyrannosaur is a 577, not a 500. And it's not a magnum. But just for you I'll use my 470 NE next year for deer.

people here slay me!!

OP, if you want to use an SKS, then, use it. But first you must know the limitations of both YOU AND THE RIFLE. I have 2 SKS's that shoot 1.5", but I played with them a lot. Remove the operating rod, now you have a bolt action and have shrunk your group a bit. Do you reload? Weigh a bunch of milsurp bullets and find some that are within .3 gns of each other (or you could pull them and even out all the powder charges, then reseat the FMJs). You can use it, but not reliably beyond 150yds without better glass than you can mount on it right now.

Thats is why I have a bolt gun chambered in x39mm with better glass. That's the backup 'yote gun or the one I hand off to guys going out first time.

I didn't know that FMJ's were legal anywhere for hunting in Canada?...

If all you have is an SKS, then that's better then nothing. The semi will be fun. Who knows you may hit one at long range? You won't hit nothing if you don't pull the trigger.
You will get addicted, then you'll be looking at a savage axis, like most do/did.
Everyone loves them and say they are deadly accurate, but I wouldn't wast my time with the pkg deal scope.those package deal scopes never did work ou well for me.
Good luck and good hunting! Post pics!!!

OP, your sig line mentions a nice 12ga. Pick up some 3" plated #4 buckshot and give er. With the right choke you'll be good to go inside 50yds. Be the guy set up to take personal shots, if you get the opportunity it'll be a blast. You can always trade off with a buddy for a couple few stands. And get a varmint rig, cuz after that first dog you'll be hooked.

Thanks for the correction, BUM. I am definitely not into the big bores, and the Tyrannosaur doesn't NEED to be a magnum. LOL!

I suppose he did, however his post also specifically delineates the SKS.

Go ahead and use what you like, you won't hurt my feelings. Just don't try to tell me you NEED to use that at a minimum! Big LOL!
