I typically use 26 standard G&H decoys and 24 Carry lite Super magnums. I'm starting to dislike my super magnums for the fact that they are so big to haul around. I was wanting to try leaving them at home a few times and see how I made out. That would leave me with 26 standard Henryetta decoys. I also have 15 G&H shells without heads that I could put out to increase my spread. Has anyone ever done this? I've had the odd decoy without a head in the past, but not 15 out of 39.

A little paint on most anything will work early in the season, I've used flat pieces of paper, dozens of Javex jugs, oil cans, even pulled up large clumps of stubble and turned them upside down so the large gob of "dark dirt" was visible. Like I said this make-shift stuff will work early in the season but after getting shot up a few times they get real picky who they associate with and everything must be as natural as possible.

Canadas will be looking at everything but the decoys. Rudimentary decoys work quite well when mixed with higher quality deeks. I still have 20 or so rubber inner tube decoys I made as a teenager. Took a while to convince my pals that they would be valuable asset to a spread. Once mixed with the $350/per dozen deeks nothing changed.
That's interesting. I was wondering if a half dozen full bodies makes a difference or not. About half of my hunts this year have been with a buddy who has 6 full bodies. I can't say I've seem an improvement with them in the field. Mind you there are a lot of variables to consider.
We once used the heads and necks from 16 Mallards and Pintails on sticks stuck into the mud to increase our 24 decoys already floating.
These where from the day befores shooting fest.
did it work any better?
Dont know, cause we ended up with another 16 Drakes in about as much time as the day before.

Chisholm and I are running a 42 dozen spread for snows consisting of 35 dozen socks of which 16 dozen are headless. Snows aren't the easiset birds to fool as many know but I see no difference in reaction to decoys with or without heads. I think the birds just see mass. Maybe on smaller spreads though last week Doug and I put out 20 of my headless socks along with 24 real geese Blue silos and 3 dozen Canadas and had some snows and Specks in tight feet down cupped and committed.
