How many of you guys call deer? What types do you use and how often do you call? Time intervals between your calling segments. I have never had a lot of confidence in them. I don't know why. Just haven't. I thought I would try more of it this year though. Thanks.

Dave.

I'm like you, never really used them, 'cause I've never had much confidence in them. But, many guys swear by the "True Talker" call from Hunter Specialties. Also, guys like "The Can" estrus bleat. I bought both, figured I'd try them out this year. Last time I was hunting, ~3 weeks ago, I had 2 does within 20 yards of me. There was no shot, too much brush in the way, so I figured I'd try the grunt call and see how they react. I blew a few grunts, they heard it, but reacted in a neutral way. All they did was look in my direction, then continue slowly browsing through the bush. I guess they recognized it as a deer call, but it did not cause them to be scared or curious. A buck would probably have reacted differently.

my son and I use the "True Talker" call from Hunter Specialties. he can get the deer to walk towards him, I can't. I just us it as a deer stopper and it works great for that. We also have the can but don't like it that much.

Ive used the c'mere deer (I think that's how it's spelled) and a grunt but usually to get a mule deer to stop and look back. I was hunting with my son when he was 10 & we had been sitting in a clump of bush with a sheet of leafy camo stuff draped in front of us. It was open for whitetail bucks and 4point or better mulies. I used the grunt and had a large mulie fork charge in so close that I thought I was going to have to shoot in self defence.

Have had lots of good results calling.I find the doe bleat works best for me but have had bucks come in to buck call during the full rut.I use a ridge runner call that does not freeze up.

Dont over call.My rule of thumb is call little and wait lots.

this year for me......i,ll give the can call a go..probly smack the antlars a bit to..
but you know...one of the best lures ive ever used was a doe i had hanging in the tree about 50 yards away..

i use a cass creek electronic caller
has
-snort wheeze
-buck grunt
-fawn
-doe
-rattling antlers
all built into it
they sound great and work well i also bring a doe can and a ridge runner grunt tube.
as for duration
when i am useing the electronic caller usualy wait no less then 10 minutes between about 15 min for manual calls

I use Quaker Boy Hammerhead adjustable grunt tube and a Primos doe-in-heat bleat great big can. Also, a small pair of rattling antlers in my back pocket for tickling.

believe it or not i've had whitetails coming to a crow call and coming with meaning too- like one of the fawns was in trouble- not just one or 2 either- must have been the way i was blowing the thing- it was an olt

Primos "The Can" is a foolproof dear bleat that really works I have called bucks and does with one from great distances. A grunt tube is much trickier to use... it will scare more deer than it will call if used at the wrong time... which is most of the time!
If you ever see an Olt Perfect Deer call... buy it.

Does the deer bleat work well both before and during the rut?

A grunt or two before some light rattling brings bucks in like crazy... providing the rut is on. We once had three bucks come to our sequence at the same time... needless to say all three got away unharmed!

I'm curious about those of you that do use calls on deer. My calling experience is only with predators, so that is why I ask.

When calling coyotes, I'll look for an area that seems well suited to them, and check for sign. If there is sign that coyotes frequent the area I'll call for them.

I get the impression that deer hunters will look for a suitable area with fresh sign, then call only if they actually see deer, not just if it seems likely there may be deer nearby. Is this the way most of you approach it?

Its a bleat in Heat call, so it will bring in bucks during the pre rut(chase phase)and into the rut, there is a time where things go quiet, thats when their getting it on. Its prior to this when the action is hot. The bucks are not hooked up with a doe, and are tending the bars:D .

No, you don't need to actually "see" deer to call them in. Call them just like other critters.

My best deer call so far is to take the Buckshot and slugs out of the shotgun and load it with 7 1/2 grouse shot...by the time we surprise each other and I switch loads they are safely back into the bush. :p

Hmmm I never thought of calling Deer before...what works?
