Using Mil Dots?

Hey Fella's

So I bought a scope with mildots. I understand the math behind using mildots. But one of the apps I am using Asks for a calibrated zoom level? Does the distance measureing with the mildots only work with it fully zoomed in? Fully out? Scope is a 4.5x14-42mm.

Also my adjustment knobs are in 1/4 MOA, is that normal for a mildot scope? Thanks all. Ive tried searching but nothing answered my questions.

Is your scope FFP or SFP? If FFP your scope is accurate at all magnification levels. If it's SFP usually at highest power the mildot are accurate (scale is correct 1mil on reticle =1 mil in life). When lower mag the dots scale changes to 1mil=5mil for example.

Depends on your scope manufacturer and if your scope is a FFP or SFP. If FFP, you should be able to range with any magnification setting. With SFP, the manufacturer usually sets a specific magnification setting for measuring distance. Your manual should indicate which mag setting to use. Some scope manufacturers highlight the magnification number by colouring it differently.

What brand is it?

Second focal plane i assume. Bushnell legend ultra HD

You can't rely on what the magnification dial says. Set up a board with bars spaced a measurement that corresponds to a certain number of mils at that distance. Then adjust the magnification dial till things line up properly. Then mark the magnification dial so that you can reset it to that position when you want to range.

Looks like for your scope that is normal (specs are here: http://bushnell.com/hunting/rifle-scopes/legend-ultra-hd/4-5-14x-44) ... To be honest it would not be my preference to have MOA clicks on a mil-dot reticle, since the point of milliradians is to keep the math simple, but once you're zeroed-in and you know your drop-offs at different distances and how to measure distance with your dots, it won't matter much.

Is this scope MILDOT scalable at 14x?

I have one and it doesn't say in the manual.

That bushnell 4.5-14x in the link is second focal plane and you'd need to be at 14x to have the reticle markings calibrated correctly.
