I have a MODEL 870™ EXPRESS® TACTICAL MAGPUL®. I use it for grouse etc, and hopefully turkey next year.

I have three choke with it:

The basic tactical one,
Full Steel or Lead
Turkey super full lead shot only

I realise than some area i would hunt for deer, you require more a shotgun than my Remington 700 .308. Distance is not far enough, and adding wood cover this would not be practical with a .308.

What choke with what type of slug munitions should i use safely and that would remain accurate at least 50m and would not "destroy" the choke or the barrel over time.

This combo would also be pratical as i could hunt grouse and deer at the same time

Thanks

No different then any other gun,buy different ammo and shoot it and see what it likes best oh yeah and don't shoot slugs through that super full choke. Destroy your barrel? It's nothing more then a tube your not going to destroy a barrel a barrel if you feel so inclined clean it every now and then but I almost never clean my shotgun barrel just a bit of oil.before storage.

For slugs, use the ported tactical breacher choke the gun came with. (Open Cyl) That's what I use with my Magpul edition 870.

When I shoot birdshot, I use an Xtra-Full Turkey choke, as it gives me 8" patterned groups at 20-30 yards!

As long as the slugs are the Foster kind they will fit thru a full choke with room to spare. A full choke is something like .720 and a slug is something like .427 so it's not even close to a tight fit. Guys keep coming on here saying it could hurt you choke and barrel but it seems to not be the case if they read past the first thing that comes up on Google.

OP, follow the choke manufactuer's recommendation. Very few will advise shooting slugs through a full choke.

Thanks for advice, i will do pattern test with the "tactical choke" and see how it goes with the birds shell. Just want to avoid to "blow" up those birds if i encouter one.

Next spring i will test more my 870 to find the perfect combot for Grouse and Deer if shootgun is more practical for deer.

Didnt had the time for planning properly my deer (work) and couldnt find a "long" distance area for my 308.

You can shoot LEAD slugs through ANY choke. Full included. They "swage" down when approaching constriction. (That's what the rifling on the slugs is for, it doesn't make the slug spin in the barrel like people think............ it makes it able to squeeze down with no barrel damage.

What do you think your dad and grandpa used .Thy hunted deer with there old shotguns full choke and all.thy did not have the option of changing the chokes on their shotguns. Rifled slugs can be shot threw a full choke with no problem and has been done for well over 100 years ..I have a full box of imperial 20g paper 2,5 inch slugs that must be 70 years old ..when I first started hunting deer I only had one shotgun for everything and shot a ton of deer with that fill choke..Dutch

Cylinder or Improved Cylinder would be best. I have shot slugs through the Mod choke with my 870, but accuracy isn't as good. I would never shoot slugs through a full choke.

Read closer guys, not full choke he said super full choke which are even tighter

Read closer, he mentions using/owning both a full and super full turkey choke.

Your post wasn't supposed to be included in my post not sure why it is? Just failing at the internet today I think. 8t was more in regards to Sgt rock; I need to pay more attention before I hit the "post reply button".

From my experience, slugs tend to shoot best through Modified or Improved Cylinder chokes. I'd pick one of those up for the shotgun, Mossberg chokes are inexpensive and easy to find.
