Gentlemen,
These files show that the USMC is asking for additional M1 Garand Rifles. These files have the USMC calling for the M1 Garand Rifle BEFORE STANDARD ADOPTION for issue with the USMC.

The US Marines, guess they knew they'd need the rifles at one point or the other so they might as well buy them and train atleast some of the troops on the use of the rifles. :)

Also interesting to note they called the US Marine Fleet Force (which is the combined Navy, Naval Air and Marine units under direct Marine command, think of the Navy ships that the US Marines use to go places, Navy Corpsman and Navy Helicopter pilots etc) as a "peace force". Guess they meant that the Marines guard US Embassy's during peace time which in 1940 would still be applicable for the United States ??

Good to see General Williams was thinking on his feet. If the price drops, buy more rifles with the extra cash!

Very cool :)

The Marines that landed at Guadacanal...i believe it was the 1st Marine Division in 1942..carried the 03/Springfield.....i would have thought that there more importance on issuing the marines with a modern rifle like the Garand...as the landing on Guadacanal was the first offensive land action by the U.S in WW2.....some U.S. army troops were issued Garands in the Phillipines.....also interesting that the U.S Rangers that were attached to the British Commandos on the Dieppe raid used the M1 rifle ...this was in August 1942...same time as the landing on Guadacanal.

Gentlemen,
Back then the Fleet Marine Force was the USMC landing Force. AS you all know now that in WW2 they became the USMC which was made up of all USMC units. The General at this point is trying to get his landing troops M1 Garand's.
Thanks again

A friend. (long gone) was on that island. After securing it the army landed to mop up. He said one of his friends came running up from the beach when the army landed shouting "they all got machine guns" (M1"s) Many a soldier went to sleep with his M1 and woke up with an 03!;)

Clancy,

Thanks didn't know it was the landing force. :)

John Sukey,

Interesting. I got to admit I'd have done the same thing in that position. :p
