It looks like USMC is going to equip all the combat arms people with HK416 / M27, with the full intention to sole source it from HK. Looks like M16A2 is dead, and M4 will disappear from all the fighting companies.

While the army is going "big" with a 12 lb + main battle rifle ( or intermediate combat rifle so not to make it sound like they are going back to the M14 days) to focus on a single issue concerning AP, the USMC's purchase seems to much more "doctrinal" sound and actually have their decision supported by experiments.

It doesn't sound like the USMC really believes the Army can actually deliver any light weight SAW, or there is really a need of 7.62 rifles....at least not within another 10 years!

The Marine Corps Systems Command intends to solicit and negotiate with only one source under the authority of FAR 6.302-1, Only One Responsible Source (FAR 6302.1 (a)(2)(ii)), based on substantial duplication of costs to the Government that are not expected to be recovered through competition and unacceptable delays in fulfilling the agency's requirements. The Government intends to solicit and negotiate with Heckler & Koch (H&K), 19980 Highland Vista Drive, #190, Ashburn, VA 20147, for up to 50,814 - M27 Infantry Automatice Rifles (IAR).

This notice of intent is not a request for competitive proposals. However, any responsible source who believes it is capable of meeting the requirement may submit a capability statement, proposal, or quotation, which shall be considered by the agency, only if received by the closing date and time of this notice. A determination not to compete the proposed requirement based upon the responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government

that's an iar sourcing project
I don't see a replacement for m4 or m16 unless I read this wrong

If you read the earlier news and what the USMC leadership said, they are making every rifleman an "automatic rifle man", including people in recce and combat engineers.

The excess of M4 and M16A2 will just go into some warehouses or be demil'ed if they have passed the expiration.

They are saying the squad leader and the Plt and Coy leadership won't get the M27 in the fighting companies, but I doubt that will happen while the rest of your guys are rolling out with HK. LOL

As I have said for years.

Poor Chris Bartocci will have a heart attack.

And yes I still love the M4 and its variants so calm down fanboys...

Considering there aren't even 50,000 grunts and that there will be more M27s than combat arms guys, it's safe to say that they do want to replace all the M4s.

50,000 is the maximum in the contract, but USMC official said 11000 was the number that would equip all riflemen.

Are they replacing dysfunctional/worn out equipment or just purchasing a gun with the same capabilities as an M4?

I understand the need to keep pumping money into the military industrial complex but I don't see the additional capabilities here.

The additional capabilities would be better accuracy and reliability. The M27 has been in use for a number of years now and its superiority over the M4 is not merely theoretical.

Lol.

Identical capabilities because they ultimately fire the same 5.56 bullet out of the same box magazines. Whatever meager performance difference between either rifle isn't worth the expense.

Regardless of the " DI vs Piston" debate, it's the barrel that's makes the difference at the end of the day, IMO HK has a superior barrel to Colt USA.

That's for sure.

Re-barreling the M4's with CHF CC 15.7 bbl's would get 'er dun if all they want is a rifle capable of dropping a couple mags worth of suppressing fire (C8SFW). Much like buying Beretta M9A3's would have done the job instead of pissing millions away on the MHS program. But who's tracking wastage anyway?
