Utas-15 road show

I got the gun out today, and have finished my video review. First, let me give a bit of a preface. The gun arrived clean and well lubricated. Upon inspection, I confirmed that the right mag tube would only hold 6 rounds of 2 3/4" shells, as was noted in an enclosed note. I mentioned that to Grumpy Wolverine, and after further stripping the gun I found that the mag spring and follower assembly in that tube were damaged. I don't believe that this damage was caused by regular usage, but rather someone disassembled the gun past the manufacturer's recommended stage.

When I informed Grumpy of this, he immediately couriered me replacement parts, and they rectified the issues immediately.

The rest, good bad and ugly, is in this video:

I've encountered what you did... I found you really have to rack it hard. If you rack it like an 870 you will just short stroke it - which I believe you inadvertently ended up doing for most of that second shoot clip (with the double feed). Do you think that was the case? I think it's just a matter of getting reps in and logging range time with it to get the muscle memory down.

PS looks friggin cold out at the YK range... Shoulda planned for your roadshow stop to be in the summer!

I do think I was short stroking the action, as I said in the video at that point. The main problem I had was the fact that the action refused to lock in the forward position after a short while. I don't know if it froze, or what the case was. I made a conscious effort to aggressively rack the action, but that didn't stop me from having issues. You saw me slamming the action forward, and it refused to lock the majority of the time.

The day was definitely coldish, and that was a bit of the point of sending it to the frozen wastes. If it had arrived in december it could have tasted -40. In the summer it's no different that the south except the mosquitoes will take your arm.

I had exactly the same issues with mine, it wouldn't lock the action. And when it did lock, it would unlock it when you start pressing a trigger but before the shot is made. in Other words, while you holding a shotgun start pressing the trigger action unlocks and your hand automatically moves back with the grip, moving a bolt back.. I returned that thing twice, second time for a full refund. At that point i was sure that they would work out all the bugs and offer a problem free 2nd gen.. but as i see not much has been fixed.

Good review and video Cavs42. I think though, that from watching the video that the double feeds etc were causing by short shucking, those actions are timed pretty finely for small movements of the action and that can cause the issues you were having. As for the not locking up, I haven't seen a gen 2 gun yet do that. Can you tell me if there is an o-ring between the barrel band and the trigger side of the lower? If there is, that is the problem, either move it to the other side of the barrel band or leave it off the shotgun all together. The gen 2 guns don't need them but some ended up coming with them. Only other thing I could think of was too much lube getting stiff and not allowing things to move forward as they should. I've had them out here in the cold and haven't had an issue like that.

Grumpy, it would seem that the O-ring could have been the culprit. I can take it off and give the gun another go if you'd like, or I can take it off before sending it along to the next tester. Let me know what you want.

You can either take it right off or move it to the other side of the barrel band, but I'd try it without it all together. If you would like to give it another go, I would be fine with that.

I agree with what you said in the video about 3" shells being a bit of a pain to load as there sure isn't much room to get your thumb behind the shell. That being said I think you'll find most people will be using it with 2 3/4 inch shells, I know I would be that's for sure.
Oh and the sling swivels can easily be removed (they are just like a hunting sling swivel, and you can move the attachment point to any of the positions where the side panel retaining bolts are.
I personally like it near the breech.
Also for those who don't like the loose spring tension on the dust cover door, just take it off and give it an extra spin or two when putting it back on, tightens things right up.
While I understand the complaints on those two things, at the end of the day those are easily remedied and really don't effect the overall function of the firearm.

Grumpy - I haven't dug my gen1 UTS out yet to check... But if a gen1 has that o-ring is it to be moved or removed as well? Thanks.

Here is my review. I still have some other range vids to sort through that I will update soon

I believe I am the 1st person who got the 2nd gun. It came in a comically huge cardboard box, that contained a nice sturdy pelican case that was a bit smaller than the cardboard box.

When the gun arrived, it was perfectly clean other than the barrel extension which looked like it had some gunk/rust inside, it also had 2 small dents in it but they did not affect function.

I headed off for a quick range test, just to get some rounds through it as quick as possible. It performed really well (and thats shown in the video I posted a few posts back), but I did also have some issues where a round didnt feed or eject, but I think that was me trying to work the action too fast. When you slow it down a bit, it runs perfect.

Had one issue where it would not eject a spent shell, needed a good smack to open the action, and I did see a bulge in the shell rim, not sure what happened, but it is shown in the video below including the types of ammo I used (mostly low brass target loads)

Also here is a target of my reloaded slugs and buckshot (25 yards), I did make a windage change halfway through for slugs

Just got the E-mail from wolverine.. I am the next tester so anyone in and around Prince George B.C. I am looking to be at the Prince George Rod and Gun Club on the weekend of the 22-23rd. I will post a more concrete timeline when the gun is in my hands.

The UTAS showed up at my door as I was headed out of town for work, SO I have had a chance to strip and inspect it, shot a box through it just to familiarize myself. It will be in Tumbler Ridge from now until tuesday for anyone that wants to see/shoot it in the evening after work ( just PM me) It will be coming back to Prince George with me and Saturday the 22nd I will be at the range in Prince George (PM me and we can confirm a time) that gives me Sunday to clean it as I assume I'm going to get that sad reminder email early in the week to send her off to the next tester :(
