UTAS UTS-15 Dilemma

I was thinking of picking up one of these after reading (and watching) some good reviews on them. I found a ton of reviews that seemed to favour the UTS over the KSG shotty. However, I recently came across some rather bad reviews of the UTS on Youtube by some guys going by the name TheBulletPoints. Maybe they're only using a first gen model? I'm not sure... However their reviews of the UTS-15 are making me a little weary about spending that kind of cash on a new toy. Their main issue seems to revolve around the breach cover always popping open after shots and the feed selector switch moving on it's own (I guess from recoil). Any thoughts on this? The gun looks great and I'd love to own one but if these issues are real world problems with the gun then I'll obviously have to pass on the purchase. Thanks.

Hi photog_shooter,

I to have been debating buying a US-15. I have seen videos of them working great (Hickok45), and then others with ftf, fte and ftf All the failure video's were of "old" models supposedly. The new shotguns are apparently OK with all the mods. I have been e-mailing Wolverine Supplies to get these answers. They also said some of the reported issues is due to the user not operating the action properly. They have a shotgun waiting with my name on it when I give them the word. Still trying to make my mind up, they are expensive, great cool factor, long distance purchase, when's Christmas, decisions decisions.

an expensive lets see what I get kinda gun... I mean buyin a norc sure maybe every 1 outa 100 will be a crap gun. They are cheap, I wouldn't call the UTAS cheap... Not something id call cheap atleast.

Why do you want one? Just get a nice semi or pump that you know will work maybe?

The UTAS UTS is a great gun if you get a newer generation one. The 1st gen or so had some severe manufacturing issues. I would pick a new UTS up over a KSG any day now. A year ago it would have been the other way for sure, as the UTS was flawed. The UTS really is a lot nicer then the KSG for loading and also can feed from both mag tubes alternately with out having to switch mag tubes without a selector. Definitely on my WTB list.

I have the UTS, runs perfect, no issues what so ever. However, the one and only time it wouldn't function is when one of our local RCMP members tried it. He could not get it to work. Hands it back, and gun runs smooth again. I dont believe he was working the action properly.

They had issues with the UTS. Apparently one of the welding tables at the factory had problems, and a whole bunch of them got passed Quality Control. They fixed the problem. Now I've heard nothing but good things of them. The UTS has a few more significant features over the KSG, like you can switch between mags. You can shoot buckshot, then switch to bird shot or slugs whatever you choose to put in each mag. The UTS also has a threaded barrel that you can attach a long goose barrel if you want.

Too many bells and whistles that were not executed properly. Torturous feed path for the shells that results in misfeeds of a catastrophic nature. Overly complex, style over substance, plastic-on-plastic design without much in the way of redeeming features.

I get the attraction of having 15 rounds available at full load, I do. I just don't see what good they will do you in a fight when you can't get the gun to feed, cycle, or function. Meanwhile, your opponent with the 870 just shot you in the face three times while you were clearing yet another FTF.

All this and only $1200? Wow. Such a deal. I would suggest you buy a real shotgun and leave the novelties for those who can't get enough.

Just curious and not to offend, but have you actually owned or shot one? I'll be posting my review shortly of the one Wolverine has been sending around and it was definitely an awesome gun. Did it have a few issues.. yes. were they "catastrophic" not even close.

I own a KSG and I can say I would buy a UTS in a heartbeat after having tested it.

Any new updates on the UTAS UTS-15....just looked at the newest gen and I love the look and the feel. Can't seem to find anywhere where the sell the Kel-Tec and I just am not a fan of the 870. Anyone feel free to chime in? I know with a first gen of anything there are going to be some issues as with the first gen XCR's but I've put almost 2000 rounds through mine which is the last gen just before the keymod and not a single FTE or FTF. So can someone give me some honest goods?

i appreciate your question and the basis for it. I have not had the chance to shoot one, and I do not see what difference that would make. I know enough about firearms design and general engineering to know a bad design when I see one. Watching the videos of various tests provides what are, in my view, adequate examples of the various ways in which this particular design falls short. As such, even were I to buy one and it turned out to be made on a Wednesday, I still would not use it for anything serious, including home defense. I could not trust it. The feed path alone is enough to disqualify this design for any serious purpose. I respectfully suggest your question to be irrelevant.

In fact, I have also watched some reviews of the KSG and cannot understand what all the noise is about. From chamber checks to reloads-on-the-run (in fact, the whole of the manual of arms), I notice several areas that fail to impress. These seem to be attempts on the part of KelTec to reinvent the wheel. I am not sure it requires reinvention just yet. Instead of tinkering with the internals, we should be working on new materials for firearms that resist corrosion and wear.

Just some thoughts by way of reply. Given the prevailing mood here, I suspect this will engender some harsh response. That will be unfortunate.

I really didn't like the uts, it's not something you can pick up and just use. Very complicated n doesn't feel sturdy. I own a ksg and although there are some things it could stand to do a lot better, I like it. Next stop for me is a benelli m4

Well talked to a lot of people I respect as knowledgable in terms of firearms of all kinds and all agree that the first gen UTS = not very good but they say that with all the changes they made like removing the composite top rail in favor of magnesium as well as a whole slew of other changes has made it just beast. Other say it takes some getting used to but once you do you can get insanely fast with it. So I picked up the newest gen yesterday and I'll let you know how it goes.

With that being said I probably should have bought a new semi for 3gun but Christmas is just around the corner....my wife's gonna kill me :)

Shoot me an email at sales@wolverinesupplies.com attention grumpy and I'll email some videos etc and maybe see if I can get you into the UTs roadshow testing we are running.

I've put thousands of rounds through these shotguns and I love them. Was demonstrating one at Wolverine Days and was knocking over wild boar targets at 175 yards with slugs and the regular 18 inch barrel and breeching choke. As has been stated, the majority of problems we see now are people not operating them properly. I've had more 870's in for warranty in the last three months than new gen or upgraded UTs-15's

They are very fast once you get onto them. I can keep up with a semi auto with one.
