Just interested in any thoughts or experiences in using 123gn Hornady V-Max bullets on whitetail deer. These bullets are wicked accurate in my SKS as well as one of my Mosins(other unshot)and my SVT-40 seems to like them too. I know the V-Max was designed as a varmint bullet but would still appreciate some input on their use for whitetails as I've already perfected this load on paper but that doesn't mean I'm gonna go experiment on living flesh if others with experience believe it to be unwise.

I have used Hornady V-Max 165 grain (red tips) Are they the same?

What does Hornady recommend? I don't see a 123gr VMax listed. What caliber are you shooting?

using a varmint bullet on big game isn't the smartest choice. it's about as bright as reaching past the screwdriver to grab the hammer to put a screw in the wall. it may work, but often results in an ugly mess.
Figured it would be a bad idea but thought why not ask and see what y'all think and looks like a no go. Well guess the V-Max will remain paper punchers and most likely will hit up the real varmints like the "V" stands for.Now gotta work on a new load for hunting and possibly find some cheaper FMJ bullets for paper shooting,as long as I can find something accurate.Thanks for the replies fellas.

The Mosin I understand but your SKS? Really? What have you done to that rifle to make it 'wicked accurate?' I am not being sarcastic, but really would like to know.
That's exactly what I thought! Until sniper762 posted the image below... And now I have to check my ammo as I thought the Hornady stuff I had was topped with the SST projectile... (runs to ammo storage...) YUP, my rounds ARE topped with the SST projectile. And I have shot two deer with the SST out of my 308. The round is VERY effective, but I would NOT trust it to hold together through a shoulder... Broadside & through the boiler room and it IS devistating!

Try hornady interlocks for a cheap accurate deer bullet. The vmax is capable on a broadside shot but not a good choice
If you want a visual aid of how appropriate a bullet is go to the store buy 2 racks of ribs and a water melon. Duct tape the ribs around the melon and shoot it. Its not the same as a deer but as close as you can get visually. When you unwrap all the tape you may be surprised at how shallow some bullets penetrate

Less than 1" group with Mosin(5 shots 50 yards from a rest using scope indoors) and with Chinese late 60's prod. SKS about 1.5" group at 40 yards 5 shots with irons using a bipod indoors no mods to accurize. Sorry I'm easily impressed and hope I didn't get you too excited about a "wicked accurate" SKS. I'm happy with the results though.

And at the end of the day you have watermelon flavored ribs for diner!!
