V-max in the 22-250

Just wondering what everyone finds to be better in the 22-250.the 50 gr or the 55gr v-max bullets.and what powders your using.

A friend loaded 50g Vmax with Varget to about 3600 fps and got 1/2" groups out of his Remington 700. When they exited a coyote, you put put your fist in the hole.

38 grains of H380 and the 55 grain V-Max worked well in my old Savage 110.

for the 55 gr. Vmax I load it just like any other 55 gr. in my 22-250 4064 or 4320, pick one. I have not tried the 50 gr.

My 12FV likes the 50gr with 36.6gr of IMR4064 or 35.0gr of IMR4895.

This is a very timely thread. I'm just in the process of building a .22-250 around a 98 Mauser action, and I don't have any experience with this cartridge.

My barrel will have a 1-12 twist and a #3 (Shilen) countour. I've been thinking of using Varget powder because that is the powder I use most (I'm a competitive shooter). I've also been thinking of the Hornady VMax.

Would a 60-grain VMax work with this combination?

What about the 55-grain?

Does this cartridge need to be pushed hard to give top accuracy? I don't particularly care about velocity for this rifle -- even glorified .223 speeds would be fine, as long as I get top accuracy. I've never gone "varmint" shooting before, and it is a dream to someday visit the Prairies for a gopher shoot.

I've used 50gr v-max bullets over 37 gr of varget in my stevens

A max load of TAC and a 50gr VMax do wonders out of my Savage 12 .22-250. Coyotes go down RIGHT NOW.

The 60 gr. will likely shoot in 12" twist, According to Shilen you are good for up to 63 gr.

if you want to have the option of shooting the heavier Target bullets you should think about going to a faster twist. Depends what you want to do with that 22-250 .

In my experience you dont' have to push the 22-250 very hard to get it to shoot. Im not using Max loads in mine and .5 moa is not hard....nor should it be in a heavy barrel varmint rig.

About using varget, I havent tried it but that burn rate works well in that case as host of other medium burning powders.....my current go to powder for 55's is 4064 or 4320......Ill be playing around 8208 when I get a chance.

In my heavy barrel Sako 22-250, 36.4 grains of varget and a 50 grain V-max with a WLR primer gets clover leaf and better results.
40 grains of varget and a 36 grain Varmint grenade work very well together.

My rifle likes the 60 vmax with Vhit. N140 powder, 4064 also works well, 12 twist barrel, I have shot up to the 64 grain winchester bullets but anything higher just keyholes.

35.7 of Varget and a 50 grain blitzking in WW brass at 2.480 LOA, will print one hole 3 shot groups at 200. This caliber is notoriously easy to laod for. I have tried many differnet bullets and powder combinations and have never had any combination go over an inch at 100, with the exception of the 50 Grain Barnes Varmint Grenades, which put up 6" or larger groups at 100 yards.

I load the 55gr V-Max and any other 55gr bullet for that matter with 36grs IMR4064 it is the same load that Ross Siegfried of Guns & Ammo magazine fame wrote about years ago and I have been using it ever since...

my cz 550 varmint loves 40 gr vmax and 760win or varget powder at 40gr.

Well I loaded up some 50gr v-max on top of 36gr varget for my 700 rem varmint .they print 1/2" at 100yds from the bench .all load development stopped at that point as I figure that as good as my shooting gets .
