Vacum sealing for long storage

Has anybody tried vacuum sealing firearms for long term storage?. I assume this can be done for handguns but how about long guns?. Any supplies out there? If it keeps foods frozen and in good shape it should do the same for firearms keeping moisture away.

The other day I unpacked and hooked up a new computer for my parents at their place. It came with the biggest desiccant packs I have ever seen. I kept them for this very reason. If I ever want to long term store something, let's say till there's a change in government... that's exactly what I'd do. Vac seal it with these moisture absorbent packs in it too.

But I haven't done this, no experience offered, just my thoughts on it.

Be careful with that. Dessicant packs absorb moisture, and "hold" it until the package they are protecting is opened. They are for temporary moisture protection, and have to be dried in an oven from time to time to remove any moisture they have picked up as water vapour. (The water doesn't simply "go away".) I don't think that they will be much good for very long term storage.

I think Mylar bags would be a better choice then vacuum sealer bags.

That's the idea. I would leave a bit more on one end so you can open, remove, then reinsert and vacuum the same bag.Just cut off the original sealing strip..

Perhaps cap the bolt handle with carbboard or maybe a rag.

Just pop the bolt out.

My sealer let’s me “ stop and seal “ when I wish. People get annoyed when you sealsuck a piece of cake flat

Foodsaver bags are definitely NOT single use. We have been reusing our Foodsaver bags for decades.

Put the rifle in a gun sock to cover the sharp edge's. Put VCI paper inside sock. Add some dessicant then heat seal into bag.
Don't forget to clean it before you seal it up!!!

Well, I did read your post again and still respectfully disagree. When you have a protrusion like that bolt knob, put a little padding around it. Problem solved and bag reusable.

This is the way to go, everything you need for 5 rifles. I've used Mylar bags for many things and are easily sealed with a clothes iron and way stronger then a vac bag. They shrink up real tight after they are sealed with 02 absorbers in them for a day. If you cut them real close to the seal they can be resealed many times and you only loose about an 1" of the bag. I've resealed them many times just using my shop vac instead of 02 absorbers. I seal the end up till about 3" from the end leaving that open. I then have a 3/4 inch tube taped to the small end of the vacuum attachment. Stick the tube down the bag from the opening and start sealing the bag towards the tube with the vacuum running. When the air is sucked out pull the tube out and at the same time be ready to seal the bag with the iron soon as the tube pops out.
