vacuum bagging primers???

I was over at a Friends place last weekend and he was vacuum bagging his bricks of primers. I was told it helps with storage life. any truth to this??? I could see it being useful in a basement that floods.
 
I keep my primers in the factory box, stored inside a closed .50 cal ammo can.

I have been using some 70's/80's Winchester Large Pistol that have been sitting in a basement that floods for 15 years, and I have also been shooting some unkown history CIL primers that are older than me, in not so shiny packaging. Every single round I have loaded with these fired fine.

Not to say it wont help sealing them up, but it just seams a waste, and makes it harder to take a few out to use them.
 
They are not 'perishables', keep them separate from powder in their factory boxes, use them to make ammo as usual and needed. Try not to expose primers to unusually high temps or humidity, and they'll last maaany years.
 
Who knows what might happen to the primer mix when you put them into a vacum? I don't, but it is possible that it will affect the primer mix, or the the other components of the primer.
 
CCI says that modern primers need no special attention as they do not absorb moistre and to store them in the factory box.
 
Agreed - total waste of time.

AFAIK, standard primers use a majority composition of Lead Styphnate - extremely stable stuff.

The "lead free" primers are usually DDNP (diazodinitrophenol), which is also pretty stable stuff. Slightly less so than Lead Styphnate, but that won't matter unless you're storing them in the open during monsoon season in Burma.

Military corrosive primers usually had Potassium Chlorate or Perchlorate as part of the mixes, which is why they are corrosive - the decomposition products of these primers include Potassium Chloride, which is quite hygroscopic and therefore draws moisture to the steel on which it deposits. The atmospheric moisture and the salt residue work together to rust the metal, just as dropping a nail in a solution of table salt would - substituting Potassium for Sodium, of course. No matter - the Chloride is the problem.

I would be concerned about storing non-loaded corrosive-type primers unsealed for long periods; both KClO3 and KClO4 are quite hygroscopic themselves. However, with military crimped or lacquered (or both) ammunition, the system is already sealed on a per-round basis.

So, in short, it's not going to HURT anything to vac-bag 'em... and if I were burying them I'd definitely waterproof the lot quite hardily... but if they're going to be stored in the garage or shed? More trouble than it's worth, for my money.
