well I messed up on my LEH numbers but ended up getting a cow / calf draw in 7-02 Can anybody local help me out with hunting areas as I have never been into the area other than passing through years ago

That area is a heaven for black bears, which I believe kills and eat most of the moose calf. Spend two weeks there few years ago with limited entry for cow/calf, and came across tree very spooky moose, and never had a chance to fire a shoot. The roads going east from Kinbasket Lake are mostly for fourtrax only. Creeks have lots of fish, and there is lots of white-tails around. Also lots of goats high up. Stayed most of the time in the low country, and the moose could be higher up ? I only learned about few moose taken by locals. The land looks like that it could support lots of moose, if not for all the bears ? Check out the high country ? Good luck !

I would also think, that if you haved a boat, it would be good to hunt the logging roads, on the easter side of Kinbasket Lake, only accessible by boat ?

Judging from the size of the waves of Kinbasket Lake, I would recommend a 20 foot boat.

It is a very poor lake for moose hunting. When the water is low, like in the fall, and this fall it will be extremely low, the shore can be a long ways away. A lake formed from a dam does not have the grassy, lilypad shoreline, that many lakes have. There would be no reason for a moose to be at the shoreline.
Someone mentioned the waves. It can be a very treacherous body of water.
I have been by road up both sides, as far as possible. Some moose on either side, but like it has been said, lots of bears, mostly black, but also a healthy population of grizzly.
I have seen moose on each side, but not as much moose sign as one would expect in such large areas of good moose pasture. I can easily believe the shortage of moose is from bear preation.

Edited to say I missed the part about hunting the roads that are only available by boat.

There is some deer/moose traffic on the northern and flat shore line of Kinbasket.

I never drifted down in a boat on the Cano River from Yellowhead highway to bridge at the northern end og Kinbasket Lake. Needet two cars for that trip, one for the dropping off point, and one for the picking up at the end.

Did hike up from the southern bridge, and spotted several deer on the posted "No hunting" property, close to the lake. Drifting down the Cano River could be productive ?

Also crossed the river, south of Valemount, near Albreda, to the railroad side, and found fresh and well used moose trails along the river, but again, the forrest is very dense, and the moose appears to travel at night ?

What I learned from spending two weeks around Valemount region 7-2 and 7-4, with two hunters with limited entry for both areas for cow/calf moose, that Valemount area is poor in moose, but one of the best areas for hunting black bears in B.C., as well as the certainty of 100 % success if one gets a limited entry draw on a white-tail antlerless ?

Also, I never checked out a region 7-2 "pocket", which could be entered from the Robson Provincial Park, showing a road going south, as well as I did not spend any time in the high country.

On the eastern side of Kinbasket Lake, we drove as far as Allan Creek, which are 70 kilometer from the Yellowhead highway. Pools in Allan Creek had lots of fish, and we meet another hunter there, who had just seen a cow moose, and therefore we spend the rest of the day ##### crossing Allan Creek area, and managed to find one set of fresh moose tracks along the creek, but not the moose. Again, encountered lots of white-tail doe's.

If one wants to explore most of the roads heading east from Kinbasket Lake, a fourtrax is a must.

Good Luck !

Thanks again for the info......I just found out from my Dad that we have an old family friend in the area who runs a Helicopter company, I'll have to get ahold of him for some info on moose populations and areas/ acess

there are lots of moose in 7-02. just not around kinbasket lake. 7-02 is a lot more than the north tip of kinbasket. drifting the canoe river from the highway to the lake will take you through all private land that is very hard to get permission to hunt.

I believe the southern shores of the Canoe River is Crown land ? And also studying that particular part of the Canoe River on the Google Map, that most of the cultivated land on the norther shores, is far from the river. The river itself, is Crown Land.

I disagree with there is lots of moose in 7-02, having spend two weeks there, looking for moose. However, there is lots of white-tails and black bears, which I believe decimates the moose population by killing and eating the the calf moose ? On a typical day of hunting in 7-02 and 7-04 we would incounter one to tree bears. We talked to a local, who claimed that once someone whistled, and eleven bears stood up around them :)

Most bears and white-tail, were encountered west and north of Valemount, on the flat land.

There are therefore in my opinion and hard earned experience, better areas for moose hunting in B.C., than around Valemount, and also hope by sharing my past experience in that area, that the next hunters will be more succesful than we were.

All the locals told me: "we see moose all the time, crossing the highway". The tree moose we encountered in two weeks of hard hunting, were extremely spooky, and we never had a chance to fire a shoot, before they disappeared into the thick and dense forrest, which indicate a lots of hunter/predatory pressure.
