Heres the beginning of my Valmet to Galil .308 Conversion. Obtained a like new .308 Valmet and a like new .308 Galil SAR, stripped the Prohib Galil of all of its special parts and sent the receiver to the feds for destruction. The next step will be to send the Valmet receiver and parts to Dlask to have a rear stock block built and to strip the gas block, barrel band and flashider from the Galil. The Valmet barrel will be chopped to 18.6" and have the Galil gas block and flash hider installed. The inside of the Valmet magwell will have to be opened up slightly to allow the galil mags to fit freely.

Heres a mock up of the Galil parts on the Valmet hunter receiver. Should look pretty cool when its done. Anyone else have pics of a complete conversion they have done? Gunplumber???

I've done a conversion to Galil and looking at your picture you'll run into the same problem I had.

The Galil gas block and Valmet gas block are not the same length at the barrel, looking at your picture we have the same Galil gas blocks.
This wouldn't be an issue except for the fact that the Hunter barrel has a reduction of the outside diameter in front of the gas block. In effect there isn't enough barrel meat to support the Galil gas block.

You'll have to look at a new barrel. I didn't bother with a new barrel, just didn't use the Galil gas block.

You'll have to speak with a machinist about that but I wondered the same thing. If I remember correctly, one of the gas block pins would have to pass through the sleeve.

I was converting a M76 and Galil at the same time so the cost was getting a bit out of control.

Love these threads!!!

I take it the galil barrel would make it restricted? Im not sure on what length it is. Too bad you had to turn two rifles into one. Stupid rule.

I'd love to find a well used valmet hunter and a project like this.

If the mating surface is the right diameter but just too short on Hunter barrel for the Galil gas block, maybe be you could fit the Galil gas block with its pins to what IS on the Hunter barrel and make up the difference with silver solder.

I built one for a friend it was in 223 though. The barrel sleeve would not work on the 223. It was way less pissing around to just contour another barrel. That way the galil hand guard and gas block fit properly.
The other problem was the tenon threads are smaller on the galil barrel. I would stick with the valmet mags unless you change the bullet guide in the receiver.

Sadly no... I did not. I did try to look it up just to look at the pics though haha. I'd love to do a Galil clone. The M78 is cool, but it is a heavy gun. Would be nice to have something more "CQB" friendly haha. Would be fun doing a 3 gun match, just for the envy haha.

RodMcleod82's build is perfect, save for my personal preference for a fixed stock. Would be so nice.
