Today, I finished fitting an AR magwell adapter to my Valmet Hunter 223. The idea was to be able to use lar magazines but also still be able to use ak magazines.

Here it is side by side with the 308, note the relative dimensions of the magwells.

With the magwell adapter (actually a galil adapter by Canis). The red and blue is just paint used to test for fit (paint rubs off where metal off the adapter needs to be taken off, I'll be taking it off with acetone once I'm happy with everything). Yes I had to take some metal off to make it fit.

The following pictures will show fit and feeding with the original mag, lar-15 223 mag and the xcr mag.

The rust coloured patch is glare and not rust (freaked me out!) - it shows up in some other pictures too...

This rifle will be going for a 7.62x39 conversion - thus the XCR mags, don't have a 7.62x39 ak magazine quite yet - if the person I'm messaging with about selling me one would please hurry up? ;) Also, looking for some parts to make it happen... And I'd rather not have to import them too, so if someone is willing to sell me some parts (see my ad)?

Anyhow, to the reason I have it side by side with a 308. We all know that 308s are plentiful but unlike a 223, they would be more difficult to convert to 7.62x39 in a way that the conversion would be reversible. It occurs to me that a similar removable magwell adapter could be made for the 308 so that it could take xcr magazines too. (I'm willing to draft it up in autocad) One wouldn't be able to use ak magazines, but it would be possible to go back to 308 with a barrel swap.

Thoughts? Comments? (unless you are sunray :p)

Looks real good to me man and I loves me some AK goodness.

I think it may be easier to convert the 308 to 7.62x39 then the 223 one.

In the end if you can convert it to 7.62x39 then wicked.

I know I LOVE both my M78 7.62x39 more then anything!!!

Actually, once I have the small parts, I was going to ask Herron to make me a new one in 7.62. I want to keep the original 223 so that I can reverse everything.

Make you a new one? New barrel?

yes, the barrel :) onto the receiver pictured. I started to discussion with them but until I have a gas block, it won't be happening.

as for stripped receivers, I don't think that's happening - I don't see much of a difference between any of the valmet receivers apart from the model number markings on them, they would just as easily be considered M76 receivers...

There is a difference in receivers. M71/m76 are relatively the same while the m78 is bigger dimensionally. Can't speak of the hunters as i dont own one

I know of 1 who converted a 308 to 7.62x39 but from a 223, never heard of that being done

Interesting about the M76 vs M78... because while I still had an M78 and a hunter to compare, their dimensions were virtually the same (apart from the differences of a stamped vs machined receiver). What were the differences you saw?

From what it appears it looks like only springs, rivets and some of the latter are compatible between all of them. It does it appear that some gas pistons work between M71, 76 & 78 but I'll let you guys look for yourselves to figure it out

Thanks and have a good day
