I've become very interested in the valmet family of rifles....well the am actually but we all know the story on that...

Anyways.im wondering what parts are interchangeable between the the m78 and an AK?

I've got a reciever, but it has nothing but a grip....so I need parts, and from what I can see, trying to import an AK parts kit(if I can)to build it.my main concern is the barrel/barrel block.i know the furniture is no good to me.

Anyone have any experience importing ak parts or using them to build a valmet?

What caliber is it? I had a 308 version and none of the internal parts were interchangeable with an AK IIRC. Perhaps it is different with 7.62x39 or 5.56mm M78's.

7.62x39 is what I'm looking for,I know some of the fire control parts, magazines, and bolt carriers are interchangeable with some minor fitting.

I believe the caliber question is about what caliber it was originally - you can tell by the size of the magwell. 308 to 7.62x39 is the harder transition since you'll need to weld the magwell or get an adapter made.

Barrels do not interchange. Valmet barrels are threaded - AK barrels are pressed in. You are going to have to get a barrel manufactured.

AK bolts fit but it depends on a caliber - if your valmet was originally in .223, a 7.62x39 bolt won't fit without modifications.

You'll also need a gas tube which is non-interchangeable with an AK, but is also different between different models of the valmet as well as between different calibers - it will dictate what gas piston you'll be able to use. Bolt carrier assembly can be interchanged if the piston fits in the gas tube you end up having to use.

Some Galil parts fit and are less expensive than original Valmet parts. You can import parts through an importer, but be prepared to pay.

Original Valmet parts can be ordered from the USA (or even Finland) and sometimes come up for sale here.

M71 or M76 Valmet parts are interchangeable with AK parts. The M78 being a beefed up version doesn't readily accept drop in AK parts.

Keep your eyes peeled on the EE in a bit (if I decide to still) cuz I'll have one of my M78 7.62x39 M76 clones for sale. It will not be cheap, I repeat not cheap.

I got a whole $750 when I sold my 223 M78 with four mags. iirc, Galil 223 mags fit the M78 223 as well as I hate to say it, a certain Polytech factory 416 223 magazine also worked. Both were keepers.....if I had only known........mochbah

All other AK receivers are prohibited except the ones as listed which are of the Valmet hunter series and are easy to find at the justice site in the firearms regulations section or as fenceline says. You can buy replacement parts for Valmets from Stoeger Canada in Whitby through your local or major gun dealer as I have for a 30-06 Hunter I once had. Stoeger was the original importer of the Valmets and together fought with the hunters up north to keep them from becoming prohibited.---Dieseldog!

I have a nos yugo sks threaded barrel in the white. I wonder... I'm currently on hunter conversion number 3. Dlask arms helped me out huge. They took a while but as always the end result made it worth the wait. Unfortunately they told me it screws up their production too much doing one offs so they won't do any more valmet work. One is an M76 clone with an original black plastic angle cut stock along with all M76 parts except hunter receiver and hunter barrel cut down to 18.6", the other is a .223 M71 clone which I may use my second (!) Black plastic M76 angle cut stock or I may fab up an angle cut adapter for the wood M71 straight cut stock and last is a .308 Galil which the last thing I'm doing is milling a slot in the underside of the receiver for the left side selector seen on real Galils. Lots of work but when you have the coolest (legal) AK obtainable it's worth it!
