Hey guys;

Anyone have experience converting valmet hunters or M78s to an M76 or galil look? If a person did go this route how time and money intensive is it? Given that the .223 valmet hunters seem to have a 20" barrel, can the barrel legally be cut down to 18.5" in the states before being imported if a guy got one off of gunbroker?

Lots of threads on the subject here already with builds being documented. They aren't cheap.

Barrel can be cut here or un the US. Just can't be cut below 18 inches in length. Has to be longer than 18.5 to stay NR along with oal requirements.

You know at 3.5K plus for a Valmet, the last thing I would think about doing is trying to make it look like something else. Oh, and to be clear for the guys that want to chime in with the colossally obvious "its his money - he can do what he want" you are right while you are so wrong.

Valmet hunters sell for less than 3.5g. You can find them for 2 to 2.5g. Just don't buy the first one you see at 3.5+.

The parts kits are the difficult part of the equation to obtain.

The only reason I'd buy a Hunter is to make it into a Galil clone. But hey, it's my money.

They're definitely do-able. I've got a Hunter to Galil-ish and an M78 to M76-ish project both partly done. Planning to send them both to Herron for the finishing touches on both when I have the cash ahead. Mine are in a couple of other threads. If I lived in the US, I'd have just bought a Galil and a coupla AKs, but here in Canada, you gotta pay to get what you want...
