I'm thinking about converting a Valmet Hunter to an M76. I'm looking at the receiver and I don't see the word "Hunter" or M88 anywhere. I'm just curious if anyone knows how you would go about proving you have a converted Hunter and not an actual M76 if you ever have to.

I know a few people have these conversions and there are a few Valmet collectors on here. Would appreciate any first hand information.

Thanks

The angled rear section of the milled hunter receiver is a dead giveaway that the rifle is a hunter. I have bought hunters that say hunter, m88, both, and neither.

M88 is prohib, Hunter is not.

This is despite the rifle being the same thing, this was the case 2 years ago on the FRT table. I haven't looked since to see if it's been fixed. 1 rifle with 2 different names and 2 different classifications, pretty stupid.

If I remember correctly the Hunter had an old FRT number for non-restricted but the M88 had a newer, higher, FRT number for prohib.
Likely a case of some lab rat not doing enough research prior to making the new entry, the M88 entry was described as AK variant with no pictures or description.

M76/M78/Hunter have versions with the same sloped rear end of the receiver but only the Hunter has a 3rd pin hole in the receiver, just above where the new pistol grip will be located. It was originally used to relocate the Hunter trigger to the end of the receiver.
The Hunter has a different shaped hole in which the new pistol grip bolts through, it was previously the slot in which the Hunter trigger dropped through.
The Hunter also has small sloped channel milled out of the underside of the receiver where the end of the Hunter trigger guard was originally located with a screw.
