This is probably a stupid question, but I will ask it anyway.

The Valmet Hunter is an unrestricted firearm, so does that not make importation of said Valmet perfectly possible? I was looking to purchase one abroad (at a good price) and just have Questar bring her over... thought I would ask, as though I think it should and can, doesn't always make it so.

Not sure, but I think they don't import the Valmet anymore, not sure why but the fact that they maybe have stopped making them?

If "abroad" is anywhere other than the USA, it should be OK.
The US is not allowing anything interesting to be exported.

easy there is a brand new one now on gun broker for 1300 $ now comes the part when you want to start playing mr. dressup with AK parts that could become an issue, since the CFC started ruling that prohib parts are prohib

I have no intention of doing any "dressing up" of the Valmet. I just want to know why they cost so much here, if I can easily import one... isn't there one on the EE for $4k? Well, I am glad to here that there should be no problem, I migt go ahead and bring it in...

The Valmet is a sporting rifle. I see no issue with permits from the US.

Wrong.
US State Department will not issue permits for export of "Significant Militatry Equipment". You might think that Valmet's are "sporting rifles", but the bureucrat(sp?) sitting in the State Dpt. office might, and probably will think differnt.
There have been numerous cases where the permits have been denied.

Just ask Mark at Questar. He will tell you that he "does not recommend" trying to import these rifles from the States. If the State Dpartment denies the permit, you will be stuck with a rifle in US that you paid for and cant import.

We are talking Valmet Hunter, not M78. The Hunter is a sporting rifle, and that is clearly supported by US "Sporting Rifle" imports. Whether they grant an export permit is another matter, and only an application will tell.

Screw buying from the USA in the first place.

There are plenty of German, CZ and even Russian folks that can import to Canada.

That is what I am looking into... again, not sure why the Valmet Hunter has such a premium attached to it. I have initiated an attempt to have one brought accross the atlantic... we'll see if there is any difficulties.

Yeah... there are difficulties... found a few suppliers that will ship, but no rifle I want. Find the rifles I want, the dealers won't ship. The other dealers won't buy and then ship either...

Still looking/trying...

Look for the norinco hunter models, made in 223 and 7.62x39. copy of the valmet hunter! uses ak mags and has scope mount. used one for years in 7.62x39
