Valmet Hunter to M76 *Updated January 30th, 2013*

Nice rifle you got there, sir :)

So how is the handguard attached in the picture?

Yes, it is rather nice. I picked it up from an upstanding individual. ;)

I have the original rear hand guard retainer and the front is held together with black electrical tape. :D :dancingbanana:

I'm on the trail of a flash hider but the front hand guard retainer has managed to elude me thus far, which is why I'm looking to have one made.

Depends on how long it takes for the front hand guard retainer to be made and to pick up a butt stock plate. As it sits now, if I had those two pieces it would be a couple of hours for shaping.

I am not sure if they ship to Canada, but SARCO had some Valmet parts. There was a company in Missouri that made some repro buttstocks and buttplates many years back, but thier name eludes me.

Yes they do sell to canuck's.
Fireball I had a brain fart about how to get a flash hider on your rig. But it's cheap and cheesy like me though :(

The OP needs this stock & flash hider...

Gosh that's a fine looking gun.

What's involved in moving the trigger assembly forward? The valmet appear unable to accept a pistol grip as the trigger is set farther back, and farther forward on after pics.

Interestingly it looks like it could have been as simple as swapping it to a different pin location. I am curious too if other parts were required.

It's very simple;
- disassemble the rifle
- pull the trigger pin retainer (a little wire) out the top
- twist safety lever out
- push out the 3 trigger assembly pins
- trigger group falls out

- flip it upside down (belly up)
- unscrew the single trigger guard screw (front is hooked in so trigger guard falls out at this point)
- the little 1 1/4"x 3/4" plate in front of the trigger has 2 rivets, use dermel and grind the tops
- use punch and punch out rivets, plate falls off

- take new AK trigger group (Tapco) and install using trigger pin retainer, the 2 forward most original pins and safety selector
- the trigger will now come out the hole that has been exposed by removing the 1 1/4"x3/4" plate

A. Take M76 grip with nut/bolt and trigger guard and mount through the original Hunter trigger hole
or
B. Take AK grip and mounting nut and bolt, cut and shape nut surround (polymer) to fit through Hunter original trigger hole
- glue bottom part of nut surround in AK grip (gorilla glue)
- thread (4M .7 Tap) rear rivet hole, the one that was hiding the plate
- slightly ream out rivet hole
- take a propane blow torch, nothing fancy, heat up original Hunter trigger guard and flatten out the front most curve
- use the dremel to recreate the lip required to lock the front of the trigger guard into the stock position found on the mag release (little slot at the outer most point of the housing)
- insert new trigger guard into stock position and use original Hunter trigger guard screw to fix the back into thread hole
- bolt on AK grip with modified nut

I figured these out on my own, it wasn't difficult.

I used "A." on the M76 and "B." on the Galil I've started.

There's no modifications to the receiver, everything is either an existing hole or removed part.

What is the difference between single hook and dual hook trigger?

I used single hook because I knew it would fit.

Double hook has 2 hooks that grasp the hammer, single has one on the left side.

I should mention that there is a;

C. Much the same as (B.) but instead of hacking up the trigger guard and reforming it you simply hook it under the mag release (near the mag release rivets) and screw it in at the back like (B.)

This .308 started out as:

and after spending a small fortune on parts, it looks like this:

This is the 2nd attempt at a shoulder stock and it still needs to be sanded, shaped and a butt plate added. It was made of 2 pieces of 19mm birch ply that were cut and shaped as halves before being laminated together.
I have a nice stick of cherry that needs to be plained down for it to fit in the ply jigs.

It still needs a front grip retainer and possibly a flash hider. Seeing how I don't want to notch the barrel for the front retainer I'm having a local company make something up.

I really hope this gives a FUDD a heart attack when hunting deer or at the range. :D

Dlask has completed my work request and at a really awesome price as well!

The barrel has been threaded for a flash hider (I found in Finland) and Joe has CNC'd a complete new bolt on front hand guard retainer (the big sliver thing).

The next step will be shaping the shoulder stock and sending it off to Armacoat for some sort of finish.

If anybody is looking for the front hand guard retainer Joe should have it up on his website or dead zombie.

Yes, I suck at taking pictures and my shop is a mess.
I thought that AK47's were ilegal to own in Canada?
